Purple and White Scrimmage

For those of you who went, What did you think of the scrimmage?

From what I saw our offense can move the ball passing. At times they were OK running the ball but to inconsistent to really make an impact. The lack of depth and experience on the o-line showed. I thought the defense played solid against the run as usual but couldn't stop the passing game. Stopping the run has always been the M-O of the defense and they were solid in that aspect but as has become all to often, we have a hard time defending the pass.

Overall I thought both sides showed signs of promise but we need to become more consistent. Luckily we have good enough skill players to set up the run with the pass. That may sound a little weird but that's the way offensive football is being played these days. Our offense excels in the short passing game with quick slants and dump offs to the backs out of the backfield. If we can become more consistent in those areas where we need help I think we're in for another great season. GO CATS!!!!!

I agree with you doublenickel... the defense definitely had a difficult time trying to limit the passing game, but here is a bright side to that. Weber's passing game is one of the best in the country, and if the defense has, even limited success against it, then I think they are going to be better than what we can see. The O-line was really inconsistent, but I'm not to worried. I kept hearing that there were a number of injuries this spring and that come fall things should be better. What I really liked was knowing that Weber has two back up QB's that are talented and can step up. Also, I was really impressed with the D-line, but they are always good, and the tailbacks. One thing that Weber has really improved over the year has been depth...Weber is going to be deep next year.

THANKS for the update, 55!

Normally I would expect the defense to excel in spring scrimmages because I think it takes more time and practice for offenses to get their execution up to speed.

The fact that we return more offensive than defensive starters for next year, along with the caliber of key returning offensive starters, probably explains the seeming dominance of the O over the D, unusual for spring.

It was very exciting to see newcomers like Jordan Brown step in and be productive in spring practice! They can only get better.... and Tad's point in another response about our defensive secondary having to scrimmage against one of the best pass offenses in the country is well taken.

Unfortunately the spring scrimmages probably don't tell us too much about next year due to key injuries, especially among linemen, and the apparent unwillingness of Mac to get too fancy in play selection.

Coach was quoted on the WSU football web site as saying, "...We wanted to stay pretty base today, and that allowed the offensive line to tee off a little bit...." (http://www.weberstatesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=39328&SPID=3468&temp_site=NO&DB_OEM_ID=8600&ATCLID=3722913)

Only four and a half months 'til football season... oh, crap, is it really that far off?!???
