QB situation

We all know who our #1 is going to be, but the season is rapidly approaching and still no word on who our #2 and #3 are, and who might be red-shirting?

The way I see it is:

1) BLM (Junior)

Both Panelli and Gauthier are JC College transfers. Assuming they both have red-shirt years available, I think one of them will red-shirt, with the other one being the back-up to BLM. I cannot imagine having 3 senior QB's on next year's team. If I were king for a day I think I would look at who looks the most promising of the two, and RS him this year. The flip side of that is, you don't want to go into the season without a solid back-up.

2) Greg Panelli (Junior)
2) Nick Gauthier (Junior)

3) Scott Burgett (Sophomore) I think he may have already used his RS year, so he should be the #2 or #3 this year.

Anthony Vitto (Freshman) Red-shirt. True Freshman, no-brainer there.

Going into next year, our QB situation would look like this:
Seniors x 2 (BLM and either Panelli or Gauthier)
Juniors x 2 (Burgett and either Panelli or Gauthier)
Freshman x 1 (Vitto)

Thoughts?

The last depth chart I looked at was BLM - 1, Nick Gauthier - 2, and Anthony Vitto - 3. Greg Panelli wasn't on it, so that could be your red shirt.

Panelli is redshirting. The #2 is a battle between Gauthier and Vitto. Not sure who is winning that battle though. Go Eagles!!!

Vitto used his red shirt last year.

I think the coaching staff has done a pretty good job of balancing QB's across class years. This puts them in a position to make certain the #2 QB is the best to fill in if BML goes down regardless of class.

Hopefully we don't need to use more than 2 QB's, so that at least one if not both, of the juniors with a RS year left (I think they both have 3 to play 2, but I could be wrong about that), can use it.

True, but I don't see Gauthier RSing next year as a Senior if he plays as the back-up to BLM this year. Doesn't make much sense. More likely that next year's break-down will be 2 Seniors, 2 Juniors, and 1 Sophomore.

Didn't know Vitto already used his RS year, I thought he was a true Freshman. I guess we will have to wait to see what the actual depth chart looks like, but if Vitto or Burgett are capable of backing up BLM, I just don't see much sense in not red-shirting both Panelli and Gauthier. :?:

I agree completely EP, if Gauthier earns the backup spot this year, there is no way he red shirts next year. The only way both juniors redshirt would be if one of the underclassmen wins the backup job.

EWU has no trouble recruiting quality QB's and the coaches have done a nice job spreading them out through the classes.

The QB that gives the Eags the next best shot at winning this season, should be the backup. The red shirts will sort themselves out in the end.
