Question of the Week 5/27/13

Should we go after Comcast to broadcast the games or seek some other packages to complement the BSC package to get further exposure for the Hornets?

It seems that Comcast Sports West was absorbed into a larger Comcast California. They will likely have a much larger range of games from which to choose in every season. Should we compete for a piece of that pie? It seems that getting on the various Big Sky packages is proving to be problematic. A team that isn't on the airwaves kinda-sorta doesn't exist to some people.

Let's hear YOUR thoughts, gang!

Should the Hornets pay a network to televise a game? Absolutely not.
Should Wanless be in contact with regional networks to pitch Hornet content and possibly/hopefully sell rights to a game? Absolutely.

With the bigger networks gobbling up all the tier 1 content for the BCS leagues and conferences starting their own channels (Pac12 Network, Big 10 Network, etc), these smaller regional networks will be left with the slim pickings for content. It’s up to Wanless to determine what the most valuable Hornet content is and see if any networks are interested in buying the rights and fronting the production costs of televising a Hornet event.

Aside from the Causeway and the Montana game, marketing the remaining games on the schedule is a tough sell. NAU is probably the only game left on the schedule with any marketability. (I assume the Causeway rights have already been sold as that game has been on TV for some years now. A regional Montana network is televising the UM game so I assume those rights have been sold as well.)

As far as getting away games televised, the hosting school controls those rights so getting them televised locally would require some kind of agreement between networks. If there is one away game on the schedule with a high chance of such an agreement, it is probably the CP game.

Agree with ALL of this.

Back in the '80s, the Hornets seemed to be a mainstay (particularly the Causeway Classic and the UOP game) on KCRA-3. I think that somehow, either 3 or 13 ought to be part of whatever package we get. But first and foremost, we should NOT be forking over the dough for that. We should be raking it in....

What about a local broadcast at least. For example, channels 31, 40 and 58. This would, at least, get the games on local broadcasting networks. It's better than nothing and the games would be professionally recorded.

I have my doubts though; especially after Bradley lost interest so quickly.

Does anyone else feel less hyped up for this season?

I figured “regional network” included the local networks, but yes Wanless needs to approach all and every TV outlet to see if there is any interest in televising a game.

Bradley was just bored and looking for something to do after he was canned from the Bee. I’m surprised he made it through almost 2 seasons.

The offseason just hit. There is no excitement for next season because it's 3 months away. It would be nice to see the wallpapers and other marketing propaganda for next season up on Hornetsports though. :|

As a season ticket holder, I've noticed that when the game is on t.v there are about 20 or 30% less people in the stands. When we have more than 9,000 people in the stadium we have energy and excitement in the air. More people in the stadiun means a better experience for the fan and the players. I always ask people to come to the game and when its a large crowd and we win they come back, If it's a small crowd and we lose they probably won't come back.

vs UNC: 7,408
vs UND: 10,774
Homecoming, WSU: 12,106
vs CP: 8,113
vs MSU: 7,143

The home attendance has been all over the map. The CP game wasn’t on TV and that only had a disappointing 8100 show up. Even coming off of a solid win only 7100 people showed up the following week for the MSU game (which was on Root but I don’t think the standard Comcast packages carry Root). Homecoming shows that people will head out to see the Hornets; the problem has been that there hasn’t been a way to retain those fans.

Anyone know how the attendance is counted? Is it actual tickets sold or people that physically walk through the gate?

When Wanless arrived on campus, he changed reporting to butts in seats.

Volek used to count tickets distributed, which is why we had 12,000 at most games.

There are many reasons why the attendance goes up or down. The amount of winning or losing, weather, night game or day game, Halloween, Holybowl, T. V network, etc. are various examples. CP at 8,113 was a night game a big plus; playing CP their fans were an extra 1k. What kept the attendence down was the game was played on the weekend of Halloween. We probably lost 3k because of Halloween considering the student section was very thin that game.

Was impressed by the CP fans turning out for the game at Hornet Stadium along with the CP marching band and cheer teams. Hope Sac State makes a push to show up in SLO and represent in the same manner. Can't cost that much to fill some buses with fans , the Sac marching band and cheer teams.

And hope to see the same at San Jose State

With these two away games in CA and 6 home games the Hornets can enjoy a lot of support in 2013.

Well judging by the marching band's website, it doesn't look like they are going to SJSU or Poly at this point. What a shame if that happens. The band always went to games in California or closeby (Reno).

CP’s stadium only seats about 10k so I would think that game would have no problem selling out. CP gets great local support so a thousand or so Hornet fans should have no problem packing out their small venue.

SJSU being a Thursday game won’t help matters as far as getting Hornet fans to make the trip. The Hornet Club has announced a “booster bus” that will be taking fans to and from the game directly from campus. I have a hard time seeing more than 1k Hornet fans heading to SJSU for the weekday game. No doubt plenty would have made the trip had it been scheduled on a Saturday. I recall we had no problem selling out our ticket allotment to the Stanford game (a Saturday afternoon tilt) a few years ago.

I don't know how great Poly's local support is. Their attendance average was behind ours and the dungpilers despite having the best record of the three schools last season. The last time we played down there it only drew about 7,000. They consider the dungpilers their main rivals and they can't even sell out that game.
I was disappointed with the turnout for the Poly game last year, it has drawn 16,000 in the past, but as was mentioned it was Halloween weekend and the younger crowd was limited on both sides. Poly has a lot of alumni in the Bay Area and Sacramento areas I suspect that's where most of their support was from.
I probably will either drive or take the bus to SJSU. I might take the bus if available to the Poly game, but I won't drive. Long boring drive to SLO town, too far off the beaten track.
