I was just browsing around looking at state rankings and such for WA state. Saw that Rainier Beach is ranked in the top 10-20 in the nation in most polls (though probably going down after a loss to Seattle Prep and DJ Fenner who's going to Nevada). They're ranked that high mostly because of high profile transfer Shaqquan Aaron from Mater Dei in Cali, a 6'7 wing. But this team won state last year without him and return a bulk of their guys, other than Anrio Adams who's at Kansas. To my surprise, I couldn't find any of the other players on the team with offers. Marquis Davis was state tourney MVP and is a cat-quick scorer. He's only 5'9 or 5'10 but Glen Dean wasn't over 6 feet. They also have a couple players over 6'9 that look to be a little skinny but with how many freshmen we have they could redshirt. It'd be nice to see some more WA guys on the squad. Ken Bone keeps taking the Spokane guys, let's mine a national powerhouse like Beach maybe?

I love having all these foreign kids. They are really good and better than most if not all in-state kids we could get. Why would we recruit in-state when we can get the stud athletes that coach is getting now?

Because the number 7 team nationally is sitting across the mountains. I too love the foreign diamonds that Hayford's mining but there's so much talent now and historically in the Seattle area it would be a crime to let some of these kids leave. Plus, look at the last two top players we've had: Stuckey and Dean, both from Seattle. Foreign players are great but it's a fact that the best high school ball is in the states and the Seattle area is one of top talent producers in the nation.

I agree we ought to recruit talent from the state instead from overseas
You have got to win before they will start to come to EWU. Sad, but that is how the world turns. I t will take a couple of years if this team doesn't find a way to play defense, and learn to screen properly.
Lots of talent but not alot of effort on the court.

Not necessarily. Davis, the guy I mentioned in my first post, doesn't have a reported D1 offer. He probably would (and should) jump at his first one. But there are ways to recruit to get guys to a program that's on the down. EWU has a couple things going for them in this aspect. #1 playing time. Kids don't want to be at the end of the pine on higher major schools. EWU definitely has some spots for early time. #2 a new coach, new system. Hayford hasn't had enough recruits to build a team around. If he wants you, he wants you. Especially in building a program. And I sure as hell know he wants to prove himself after coming from D3 to D1. #3 Craig Ehlo. His coaching? Eh I don't have enough info to make an argument for that. But NBA experience and playing against Jordan (lol) have a lot of weight in recruiting for a Big Sky school. #4 Rodney Stuckey. Yup, you can be an NBA first rounder, even if you're playing in Cheney. Don't get all negative yet, there are angles they can take to not waste our schools budget to travel across oceans. No offense. But they need to at least try and I think EWU bball has more going for it than people give it credit for.

I love having all these foreign kids. We don't need any Washington kids. I do think after beating Idaho State that we have turned the corner. Ron, why do you think we aren't playing defense, setting screens or not putting forward effort????? I think we are! Do you know anything about basketball?

Your optimism is awesome but has no back. Be realistic. Idaho State is terrible and we barely beat them. I'll say it again: the best prep ball is in America. Jump on the foreign train all you want but the reality is there is one guy, Jois, performing at a solid D1 level. I mean we got blown out by a terrible UC Davis team. I get the feeling from your posts you don't watch any of the games. Anywho, you seem to find the tiniest positives out of this seemingly terrible (and foreign) team and that's admirable.

Personally, I dont give a rat's ass where our players come from. Do you think Weber cares that Lillard wasnt from Utah? Or Boyette, Patten, Gill or The Show before that? And do you think Griz fans care that Cherry or Jamar arent from Montana? Hell no - they want to WIN. However, I do find it an interesting topic because a know former coaches were pressured to recruit only WA kids. That is D2 or D3 stuff - not how you win in D1.

I agree with wiseoldowl: I am not sure where 1990's optimism comes from. We beat a terrible Idaho State team, and had to hold on by our fingernails to do it. And wiseoldowl is finally saying what I have been saying since the first game I saw this team play this season: we dont play any defense. And the statistics prove my point.

And for anybody who says wait until Coach Hayford gets "his guys" I say this: we had a decent team last year because he inherited some guys who played defense - Colimon, Ederaine, Forbes, Griffin. For the most part, "his guys" - Chiverton, Crosgile, Kelly, Seifert, Reuter, Hickert etc - have proven to be either unable or unwilling to play defense. On top of that, I have serious questions about Hayford's ability to coach defense. We constantly make the same mistakes, and constantly have a lack of effort on defense and rebounding. Our defense is terrible this year, and last year all we did was foul repeatedly. I dont feel very confident about our prospects once he has a team full of "his guys."

Solid points, but you airballed mine. All of "his guys" have barely played in his system. Crosgile is a first year transfer, Seiferth redshirted by this he's finally getting game minutes, Kelly was a walk-on and is a one trick pony, and Chiv doesn't really play. I'm not defending Hayford by any means but if you tell me that we're better off recruiting over the oceans I'll laugh in your face. There's one thing you and other people need to realize: Rome isn't built in a day. Coaches will have struggles (especially with the program Earlywine left) but need a few years to prove what they can do. Just like the Colorado football coach who got promised 5 years and was axed after 2. You have some good points, but I'm not sure you see what I'm trying to say here.

Also, I've watched the games. Defense is terrible. But they're YOUNG and not used to the coach's system. There's not much to like about this team now, but my points are about the future ad building a program for later. Anyone can go to ESPN.com and look at stats.

We will win this year. We have some work to do. I am admittedly puzzled as to some of the concerns raised on here. Coach will get it done. These are almost all his guys now with only two players being from prior coach. And we have some older guys too that have played a lot of ball elsewhere. We have the talent. Kelly is not a one trick pony. He is finally getting minutes. The first year is always tough but coach had a good team last year which would have been really good had we not lost a starter in the kid that went to Utah. Now it is almost all his guys and they will be good. So I disagree with most people on here especially the post of Ron.

Welp 16 out of his 23 FG's this year have been from behind the arc, and not at a good % either way. If I were a coach studying tape I probably wouldn't guard him within 17 feet.
