Rat Ball

I'm hoping to watch our team play a few times this summer. A number of recruits will be visiting on unofficials to play with the team in June. I'm hoping to catch at least 2 games. I've heard that the coaches are going to bring a number of local recruits in to see how they look and play with the team. Most importantly, we will get to watch the new players.

Tallhad, let me know when they play. My camera and i may want to grab a few images for the fans.....this is still a fan website :thumb: , right?

Born,

Unfortunately, since this is rat ball and it is in June, I'm pretty sure that photography isn't allowed. If you want to come and watch, I will see, but as for taking pictures. I'm pretty sure that that will not be allowed. One of the biggest reason why is because during the summer a number of potential Wildcats make their way to Ogden for un-official visits to meet the players and coaches and to play with them. Sorry man.

As for the site, you know the KNOB in charge of making changes. I sent him recruiting information almost three weeks ago and nothing has changed. Pretty sad. Guess he is getting bored with Weber State now that he is the biggest A's fan in the world. What a wank...drop the Yankees for America's biggest losers?

So, I had the opportunity to watch a workout yesterday. It was definitely a fun experience. They weren't scrimmaging, mostly working on drills. I would have loved to have watched a scrimmage, but that is life. Anyway, no matter, I was able to watch the new guys play a bit. The team is completely different from what it is has been: No Bull, No Mahoney, No Lillard, which was really hard to watch. But the new guys look like they will fit in nicely.

Scotty and Mook are the team leaders and were doing a great job of showing the new guys the ropes. Yes, they were, like always, tough as nails, but were constantly encouraging, guiding, and uplifting the new guys. Mook looked like a man possessed. He was playing extremely well and it showed that he had been training hard since school had ended. If the Cats can keep him healthy, then Mook has the chance of being an All-Conference guy. Scotty, well he is Scotty. Hitting shots all over the court, looking to improve and always ready to hit the court.

Other bright spots. Davion Berry is damn good. He needs to improve, a bit, on defense, but it isn't a major concern or weakness. Both Freshmen are going to be really good. Joel needs to get a bit tougher, but he is long and quick. Hajek was moving great after the knee issues he sustained this past season. Yesterday, was his first day fully back. The coaches wanted to make sure he was 100% before letting him near the court. Wheels is healing nicely and will be back by the middle of August. The coaches don't want him to come back to quickly and are going to give him some extra time to ensure everything is fully healed. Richardson, like Mook, was a man possessed. He is a workhourse and won't back down to anyone. He is our best defender. His offense still is a question mark, like creating and driving, but he is an excellent outside shooter. Tresnak, well...he has the potential of being the best big in the conference. He can create, moves really well with the ball, has a nice touch with passing, but still has a hard time on defense. He doesn't move as well, which is weird. He moves well on offense but not on defense. He gets slow. He is working hard on it and will be far better next fall. I think we all give Tres some crap, because he has such potential of becoming a very special big for the Cats. I know he will. Lord Byron...well, he is thinner than he was last season and is jumping better. I saw him dunk for the first time in his college career. He is a special player and is only getting better. He has a nice inside/out game that can really spread the floor and he is a deceiving defender. If opposing teams don't respect him, at anytime, Byron can hurt them. His defense is improving and he is becoming a better rebounder.

Royce Williams and Wayne Bradford. Of course this was a practice and not a scrimmage, but both guys look like they will be solid additions to the program. Royce is a bit slow, but he was guarding guys he won't have to guard in the Sky very often at the 3, and is also not yet quite 100%. If he plays the 2 he will need to get quicker. I'm sure, at least this season, we will see him mostly at the 3. Bradford is a bit rough, yet, shows flashes of brillance (both do). He is going to be an excellent player for the Cats. Zaid, wasn't at the practice. He might be taking summer classes finishing his academics at Barstow. I'm not sure. All I know is that he wasn't there. He was the guy I wanted to see the most. All in all, it was a fun experience.

Other team notes: Josh Fuller is for sure returning to Weber State. He will be playing the 4. Weber isn't looking at Neal Monson at all. He can try to walk on. The Cats are looking to sign a SG/wing and a 4/5 type. Hill could play right now, but he needs to improve his dribbling and feel more comfortable playing a wing position, but once he does. YIKES!! A year working on his position will make him that much better of a player in the future for the Cats. Logan Foster is still with the team, and there was another dude there. I think it was Borklund from Bonneville High School. I know that the Cats are going to bring Race Parsons in from South Sevier to play with the team sometime this summer. Not sure when, but sometime. The Cat have replaced coach Gardiner with a coach from Houston Baptist. I can't remember his name, but he looks like he knows what he is doing. I think coach Rahe is taking over Utah recruiting, not sure though. I didn't get a chance to talk about the schedule at all.

Nice initial impressions. Do you think the team will be better than last years? I don't see how; Dame isn't there. I'm sure Weber is still one of the top teams in the conference, but the true question is whether or not the Cats will be able to beat the instate teams.

As much as I like beating the instaters, I would take a win in Missoula over a win in Logan, SLC or Provo anyday, cause that is the game that matters the most.

As for conf race, I think that once again it's gonna be a race between Weber State and Montana, however I do think that UNC, EWU and PSU and maybe even North Dakota can all make some noise, Sac might be better, but after that it's anybodies guess.

If I had to pick the standings right now I would have them as thus

top 7 make the tourney

1. Montana
2. Weber State
3. Eastern Washington
4. Northern Colorado
5. Portland State
6. North Dakota
7. Sacramento State

8. Southern Utah
9. Montana State
10. Idaho State
11. Northern Arizona

I agree Wildcat, the most important wins are those wins that lead to something. Getting a W in Missoula would be nice. I'd love nothing more than for the Cats to upset Cherry's hope of winning the Sky as a SR. As for who will fall where...I tried earlier to figure it out and I'm sure throughout the summer and early fall, I will change my mind many times.

The more I look at it, I think Montana State will be better than any of us think. They will have a few guys back from last years team, a far better PG in Antoine Bigalow and could if their bigs end up meshing quickly, shocking a few teams. But then again, MSU could really stink, AGAIN. You never know with a bunch of JC guys coming in every year. Losing Reid and Fall are huge loses for the Bobcats. As for Sacramento...I've got them as my dark horse. I think they will be pretty good. I'm not so sure UNCO will overwhelme anyone. They have practically the same team as they had last year, but with more experience. Yes, I heard that they have a stellar stud like star guard who sat last year, but where will he play and whose time will be cut for him to play? They have Tate Unruh, Tevin whatever, and Paul Garnica already playing good mins. I guess he can take the mins Elliot will be voiding by his departure.

As for purp...yes, I think Weber, team-wise, will be better than last year. No they won't have Lillard to bail them out if they get into trouble, but I think the team will, overall, be better and the bench deeper.

OK. I've had a chance to see the new guys, sans the 'Duce'. The operative word here is 'POTENTIAL'. None of them are ready to step into major roles right now. One or two of them may be ready by October. Bradford could pass for 16 years old. He has a really good stroke and is deceptively quick. However, he needs to put on about 20 lbs of muscle and gain some maturity. Williams is a smaller version of Mook and needs to adjust to the speed and physical nature of D1 ball. Bolomboy shows flashes of brilliance, but needs to get into better condition and have his body mature. Hill is physically impressive, but needs better conditioning and to adjust to his new position and the speed of D1 ball.

The top 7 guys on this team will be as good as any in the past. After that, we drop off quite a bit. Had Mike Brown stayed, he would have been the first wing off the bench. As it is, I'm not sure who that might be. I think that the new guys are a year away from really helping us. I think we are more athletic than we have been in the past, but I don't think we are deeper in proven talent. This could be a year that a walk on gets some playing time. :coffee:

I would have liked to have watched a scrimmage, I guess I don't give enough . Anyway, I like your analysis. I feel that Deuce is the missing piece. He was the most important recruit this spring, along with the WANK that went to Wyoming, and it was good for the coaching staff to sign him right away. Bradford, the coaches know that he can RS and that he has the potential of becoming really good. A year learning his position and role on the team would be really great for him. Williams will be needed next fall. A lot is expected of him. I think he has the maturity and desire to make the necessary adjustments to get better. He has risen to the challenge each time he has been called upon to up his game (prep school, JC, and now DI) and I think he will be able to do it again at Weber. Bolomboy and Hill also have a ways to go, but there is always a transition from high school to college. The game becomes a hell of a lot quicker and competitive. Hill looked liked the better athlete out of the two when I saw them. You could tell Bolomboy was winded (could be altitude who knows) and a bit out of shape; that won't last long. Yet, even though Hill is looking solid, I really think a year as a RS would be the best option for him. He needs to improve his dribbling and out-side shooting, but once he does. YIKES!! He is going to be really good.

One thing that makes me feel better about the new guys is that they aren't use to our team and how they play ball. They have only been playing with them for about a week or so (maybe two). Our regulars have been together for a while now, and play well together. Rahe, by conference, usually only has a 9 man rotation. So...as long as the Cats can get 10-15 (at the most) good mins out of Williams and Zaid then the team should be fine. Maybe Logan Foster can be called upon to help the team a bit too. He does know the system. If needed Rex too.

Olds, were there any recruits there visiting and playing with the team. It is alright to say so, recruits can attend scrimmages at various schools in the summer on unofficial visits.

Top Mins getters 2012-2013:
1. Scotty Bamforth 30+
2. Gelaun Wheelright 25-30+
3. Davion Berry 25-30+
4. Mook 20 - 25+
5. Tresnak 20 - 25
6. Fulton 20 - 25
7. Bolomboy 15 - 20
8. Richardson 15 - 20
9. Hajek 10 - 15
10. Zaid 10 - 15
11. Williams 10

Where is Zaid? Why isn't he here?

Tal;

There was a big white kid there, that I didn't recognise. It was probably one of the walk-ons. There weren't any recruits that I could see. The coaches are coming up on some recruiting periods and will be traveling the country. This is a critical time for next fall's recruiting. Coaches are only allowed out on certain days, over the next month or so. They have to make the most of it. The timing of this NBA draft is advantagous for us. Damian is the best recruiter we have right now. He can open doors without even being there.

The recent coaching hire should help us in recruiting Texas and the southeast in general. He sounds like a really good pickup for us. :thumb:
