As I watched ESPN-U Sunday, waiting for the Cats to be selected for the NIT, only to come up "missing", yes, I got to say, it was an insult to the team and players for being overlooked. I thought it must be the way Montana felt last year, going to the conference Finals coming in 2nd place, and then not being called for the NIT, and having to play in the CBI. Fans on the Griz board yesterday were even saying how Weber got hosed.
A couple things came into clarity for me, and want to share them:
1. It is not about the best team getting picked; it is about the conference you come from and the $$ you can generate. Big Sky teams will always be viewed as Small-Major teams, until there is repeated success at the NCAA level and teams get on the radar of the sportswriters. A 23-6 record and 70 RPI won't cut it, since most of the writers think basketball is not played west of the Mississippi River, and games are played too late for them to follow. With this current season record, the attention Damian has garnered, and the fact that he is a likely first round pick for the NBA this year, one would think NIT would have wanted the hype....nope!
2. The Cats have to understand how the BSC is viewed, then use it to advantage. Make your post-season memorable with what you get. As another post stated, we have a much better chance in the CIT to advance to the Finals than a one and done which could happen in NIT. Let's use the opportunity to garner publicity, exposure and success toward recruiting for the Cats.
3. After the dust settles, Weber State still has a bunch of players that are good people, good students and good players, capable of hanging with anyone. As fans, let's put any disappointment (and yes we have it) behind us and support these guys and coaches. Success comes in many ways!
OK, my rant is done. I for one am looking forward to see how the CIT plays out. Yes I figure the players are p'd off for the snub, they need to use that energy, and their competitive spirit will raise them up to the challenge.
