Recap pre conference play

So we make it through the non-conference 5-6 which is a bit misleading as we only have 2 DI wins (UC-Riverside and Portland). There are many issues regarding this team which could be alarming. Three point shooting is a problem, defense is rather lax, and now rebounding seems to have taken a turn for the worse. Also, similar to the Blazers, we seem to want to get behind big early on and try to catch up. Many things need to be cleaned up before conference play starts on 12-31. Hoping we can do it.

This makes me quite uneasy. There is something rather familiar about this sequence of seasons under a new coach.

Throw out those two cupcake games and we’re probably looking pretty bad statistically among all of the Big Sky programs going into conference play. Concerns are obviously all aspects of shooting (FT (64.7%), FG (40.9%), and 3P (27%). Also on our FG shooting, we’ve put up a ton more shots than any of the other programs (the second closest is 83 shots less). Sure this is due to our fairly solid offensive rebounding this season, but what good is it when we just can’t get the ball in the bucket? Another huge concern is that we don’t take care of the ball. Sure our turnover margin leads the Big Sky, but our assist/turnover ratio is pretty bad due to our conference leading 173 turnovers. Also, we foul. A lot. I know we are aggressive on defense, but it seems like we get a lot of whistles. 318th (269 total fouls so far) out of 351 programs, pretty bad.

Lot of stuff to work on if we want to be playing meaningful games in late February and early March…
