record setting year?

Could this be another season of broken records? Last year VA and Kupp raised the bar, can the Eagles establish new highs again?
What about on defense, are there vulnerable records there? Which ones?

I think offensive records will fall this year, but I think they will be team records including total points, total yards and wins!

Ronnie Hamlin is in the running to set the school record for most tackles and also in the running to set the Big Sky record for career tackles. He is 71 tackles short of the school record and 110 tackles short of the Big Sky record. He had 140 tackles in 2013.

Ronnie would have to attain 190 tackles this season to break the FCS record, which is pretty unlikely.

Problems with Defensive Records is they often come in poor years when the offense is struggling or not controlling the ball keeping the defense on the field longer or on Defensive Teams that can's get off the field on 3rd down. Sadly, often the Nations leading tackler will be on one of the poorer teams for that year. I don't see our offense struggling this year and I believe our defense can get off the field in 3 downs. Should be an exciting year! :D

LBCOACH totally agree, but with our offense scoring so quickly the defense tends to be on the field more because of quick turnarounds. I am pumped to watch the D play I think everyone is forgetting about the huge amount of talent that returns this year from the D. Too much focus on the O - - - I know the O is sexier, but Defense wins Championships and we definitely have the core to do that again!

Don't know if it will happen this season or not, but VA will break every school and Big Sky offensive record before he's done.

Also, agreed on both points above. The efficiency of our offense often times means our D is on the field a lot. However, I think we did a better job of being balanced in 2013 and 2012 then previous years in the Baldwin era.

Our D will be better than most think. LB's are going to be nasty! Ronnie, Cody, Havili, and all the newcomers.

Really excited about the potential in our running game, too. Quincy and Mario had great seasons last year. Wilson, Moore, Martin?? We are loaded.

I *really* hope to see a lot of defensive improvement this season. It sucks to watch our defense get rolled to start every game.

A dubious statistic: Every team we played that was better than .500 last season scored on their opening possession against the Eagle D, except Southern Utah (who was awful on O) and Jacksonville State (who scored on both their second and third drives). You simply don't win championships with that kind of problem.

I'd have to look at how 2012 played out, but if I remember right, something like 10 of the 15 teams we played that year also scored to open the game.

No doubt, I couldn't believe how awful Idaho was in 2012. Not only did they have no talent, but they couldn't even get personnel onto and off of the field properly. The old Idaho Big Sky teams of the early 90s would have beaten the 2012 version by 4-5 TDs easy.

Those were some really good teams. I really think Idaho's athletics programs all-around were a lot better in the Big Sky.

Good news, just heard here:

on A.D. Bill Chaves weekly podcast that season ticket sales this year have already exceeded last years total!

the 2010 game against Montana had almost 13k if I remember correctly from being there at the time. Would be really nice to set the single game record but more importantly the regular season record and better attendance in the playoffs.

Agreed. IF and when we can make it back to the semi's this year it'd be great if our defense didn't spot the other team multipe TD's in the first half. 21 points to Towson in 2013 and 35 to Sam Houston in 2012! What the hell happens to our defense when it comes to the semi's (2010 exluded)???

Let's not pretend our defensive errors are some ambient issue in the National Semifinals. Our defense has routinely been terrible to start games. I have no explanation why the D always comes out looking like they haven't watched a second of game film in the previous week. Our early game defense has been an Achilles heel for a long time, and it's high time to rectify the problem. Frankly, our defense after the first quarter of games is usually pretty good.... Without looking, I'd bet the number of points scored against the Eagle D in the first quarter is about 50% of the total surrendered in the last couple seasons.

You put a defense on this team that matches the performance of the offense, and we're probably a national championship winner each of the last two years.

Like Dopa said, it wasn't just isolated to the semi's or even the playoffs. Hell, we got lit up by Idaho State. We just ended up scoring a shit load more points than them.

It is curious - our defense was abysmal in the 1st Qtr of most games, slightly better in the 2nd Qtr, downright dominant in the 3rd, and generally pretty soft in the 4th.

We have the best offense in the subdivision. We need to find a way to get 1-2 more stops in the close games where the offense maybe isn't firing on all cylinders. (Towson) I think that's what made the 2010 team so special, and ultimately the difference between a championship team and just a great team.

The strange thing is we've had some incredible talent on defense the past several years. I really think a big reason our D gives up so many yards is the "keep it all in front of you" mentality.
