Recruiting and Message Boards RULE and REMINDER.

With the excitement of a new recruiting season picking up steam, we are implementing a new change to our message board policy, and it going into effect immediately. As we all know, it is a recruiting violation for a booster to contact a prospect - or a prospect's family - before a prospect signs a Letter of Intent AND ALSO enrolls at said University.

This is just a friendly reminder from your ever watchful DEN staff that these rules extend to message boards.

The rules actually read as follows:

NCAA Bylaw 13.01.5.1 applies to Division I athletics and became effective August 1, 1987. It reads as follows: "In Division I, representatives of an institution's athletic interests (as defined in 13.02.12) are prohibited from making in-person, on- or off-campus recruiting contacts, or written or telephone communications with a prospect or the prospect's family or legal guardians."

NOTE FROM the DEN: In this case, "written" includes communications via message boards, and that is one situation we have no interest in messing around with.

Bylaw 13.02.12 defines a booster (which is a representative of an Institution's athletic interests). An abbreviated version of this regulation is set below: A "Booster" is any individual who is a member of the university's athletic booster club, has ever made any donations to the club or athletic department, is involved in any manner of recruiting prospects or in providing benefits (summer jobs) to enrolled student-athletes, or is otherwise involved in promoting the university's athletics program."

NOTE FROM The DEN: More importantly, if you have ever fallen into the "booster" classification, you will always fall into the classification and will be regarded as a booster, even if you are no longer technically donating money to the school.

We have consulted multiple site administrators within the Scout network, and are adopting the following policy:

1) Messages from prospects and direct family members of prospects will be deleted immediately. This policy will end as soon as a prospect signs and enrolls at Idaho State University.

2) Prospects and family members are ALWAYS welcome to READ this site. However, because of the risks to the program and the prospect’s recruitment, posts and dialogue between prospects/family and our readers - many of whom are boosters – must be avoided.

Thanks for the info here Bengalcub, lots of info.. Have you heard any more news about a NCAA investigation, or any names asscociated with a booster in this incident?

I think it's safe to say that you probably more in touch with what is going on.

I don't care to know the name of the booster. What would I do with the information? It's enough for me to know that somebody threw a *spanner in the works* and by some selfish act screwed the system for ISU sports. Enough. Let's make RIGHT what's wrong and make sure it NEVER happens again.

The boosters name does not concern me either. Plus, the NCAA has not released its finding. Maybe these were very minor booster related violations, who knows?

What upsets me the most is the fact that obviously violations did occur as ISU has self reported that they did. If you are going to allow a booster very deep access into the athletic program (friendship with the AD and also a basketball search committee member) then booster violations cannot occur and if they do, then the AD himself has been reckless in giving a friend that type of clout and access.

Look, if this was a booster that was not in Tingey's inner circle, I could never fault Tingey for the actions of the booster. But that isn't the case, he was and that recklessness concerns me. Quite frankly, I am concerned that it does not concern others more. Tingey is the leader of the athletic department and I would expect better judgment.

I will not sit here and try to discredit the good that Tingey has done for ISU, because he has done some wonderful things. However, he has performed like an amateur on some very big issues. This being one and APR (ISU should have recognized and fixed the APR before it spiraled out of control) being another. Both of these instances put ISU on the NCAA's radar and both will have some lingering consequences.

Cub, I really appreciate your contributions to the Den and am in agreement with you 90% of the time, but I have to disagree with the idea that the booster being friends with Tingey makes any difference. Isn't the AD supposed to cultivate friendship with boosters? And don't we want the AD to seek donations and support from friends he had before becoming the AD? I am no expert on how athletic departments operate throughout the country, but I suspect it is typical for a lot of effort to be put into cultivating relationships with boosters and doing things to get boosters involved and help them develop a sense of ownership in the program. Now, there are lines that shouldn't be crossed, and if that has happened here then by all means it needs to be corrected. But to say that Tingey being a close friend with the booster makes it worse doesn't make sense to me.

Fletch, I respect your opinion as well. But, I must disagree here.

Access is the problem and a fair number of athletic department employees have had concerns about this access and it was communicated by the prior coaching staff.

Next, as a AD you cannot have a booster on your search committee and allow them to accompany the "interim head coach" on recruiting trips and functions while being considered for the permanent position. I simply do not believe that this was unknown to Tingey or other member of the athletic department. I think this access and lack of oversight was allowed because of friendship and I think decisions were made that put friendship above the interest of Idaho State.

Now, I may be way out of line, but it is what I believe. I personally like Tingey and the booster, but I value the well being and the integrity of the athletic department over what I think of folks on a personal basis.

This was preventable.

Are there any latest developments in the possibility of NCAA investigations or sanctions towards the ISU basketball program? Hopefully, no news is good news. Haven't heard of anything in the papers either.
