Anyone have any comments on the recruit class? My guess is at least 3 of the 6 transfers will redshirt.
williestarbuck said:Well, from the way I see it, 3 will have to Red Shirt to make room for a 12 man roster. Veteto is a no brainer. This will be a good opportunity for Dani Lopez to develope and save a year of eligibility so I would strongly consider him. It would give us 2 years with Veteto and Lopez on the low block. My 3rd RS will be Hesseldal. From the tape I've seen of him, he's a good passer, descent ball handler, shows some athleticism but not to the degree I've heard Katz speak. He sees the floor well and his 14 pts and 6 rebs speaks for itself. My problem is his intensity or lack of on the defensive end. He doesn't have the best foot work, he doesn't pressure the ball or fight through screens and even though he grab 6 boards a game, he probably should have been more at 9 per since he and Ricardo Andreotti Bodra (6' 8'' Univ. South Dakota) were the only 2 bigs on the team. I may be too critical there, but I still believe he'd be a good RS candidate to improve his lateral movement and defensive aggressivness. Interesting, side note, he and Antonio Proctor played in the same league and split 2 games both by a margin of 14 pts.
So those are my 3: Veteto, Lopez and Hesseldal. If it's true Lopez is gone then it's Veteto and Hesseldal. We currently have 7 on the roster (Dickson, Lopez, Jackson, Toles-Bey, Bjegovic, Johnstin and N'Diaye) plus the 8 recruits. Is Johnstin still on? If he's not or he gets cut, and Lopez is gone, there's no need to RS anyone.
I agree wsb, but I don't see how all of these transfers will find enough playing time to develop which is why I think some of them would be better off with a RS. I would have to think Katz is going to start/play the best players regardless, so I don't think he will RS players just for the sake of RSing them.williestarbuck said:I see your point, SD, but I'm not crazy about the RS option. I don't deny the benefits but I'm not sure a player develops that much not playin. And I'm hoping the transfers are good enough to play comin in. I did suggest Casper Hesseldal as a candidate for the reasons mentioned, but otherwise, I just feel a JC recruit should be able to contribute immediately. I'm okay with developing a big or RS'ing a Freshman though. I think we have to strike while the iron is hot. We have to build off a fairly successful season and take advantage of the fact we have a SR point guard. I suppose competition in practice will tell the tale but I'm hoping the transfers will contribute and the Freshman poing guard can learn under T-Bey. Just my 2 cents worth.
Thanks for the input and welcome.B. Eller89 said:I played against McCarver this past JC season. Hes pretty athletic and should be a 4 guard. We will see what he can do at the higher level this year.
