The only one I see sitting out next year is Konner Veteto, (transfer from UC Riverside). The other players will be needed to play. We only have five players back from last year. The rumor is Dani Lopez is no longer with the team.

Well, from the way I see it, 3 will have to Red Shirt to make room for a 12 man roster. Veteto is a no brainer. This will be a good opportunity for Dani Lopez to develope and save a year of eligibility so I would strongly consider him. It would give us 2 years with Veteto and Lopez on the low block. My 3rd RS will be Hesseldal. From the tape I've seen of him, he's a good passer, descent ball handler, shows some athleticism but not to the degree I've heard Katz speak. He sees the floor well and his 14 pts and 6 rebs speaks for itself. My problem is his intensity or lack of on the defensive end. He doesn't have the best foot work, he doesn't pressure the ball or fight through screens and even though he grab 6 boards a game, he probably should have been more at 9 per since he and Ricardo Andreotti Bodra (6' 8'' Univ. South Dakota) were the only 2 bigs on the team. I may be too critical there, but I still believe he'd be a good RS candidate to improve his lateral movement and defensive aggressivness. Interesting, side note, he and Antonio Proctor played in the same league and split 2 games both by a margin of 14 pts.

So those are my 3: Veteto, Lopez and Hesseldal. If it's true Lopez is gone then it's Veteto and Hesseldal. We currently have 7 on the roster (Dickson, Lopez, Jackson, Toles-Bey, Bjegovic, Johnstin and N'Diaye) plus the 8 recruits. Is Johnstin still on? If he's not or he gets cut, and Lopez is gone, there's no need to RS anyone.

Is Lopez looking to get out?

It is probably best if Katz RS some of these juniors. Otherwise there will be but a handful of players and a hell of a lot of recruiting that needs to be done in 2 years. Plus a RS for some of these transfers would definitely help with their development and adjustment to the D1 level.

If the Lopez rumor is true that’s too bad. He would have been a sophomore and would have had plenty of time to develop his game.

I see your point, SD, but I'm not crazy about the RS option. I don't deny the benefits but I'm not sure a player develops that much not playin. And I'm hoping the transfers are good enough to play comin in. I did suggest Casper Hesseldal as a candidate for the reasons mentioned, but otherwise, I just feel a JC recruit should be able to contribute immediately. I'm okay with developing a big or RS'ing a Freshman though. I think we have to strike while the iron is hot. We have to build off a fairly successful season and take advantage of the fact we have a SR point guard. I suppose competition in practice will tell the tale but I'm hoping the transfers will contribute and the Freshman poing guard can learn under T-Bey. Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree wsb, but I don't see how all of these transfers will find enough playing time to develop which is why I think some of them would be better off with a RS. I would have to think Katz is going to start/play the best players regardless, so I don't think he will RS players just for the sake of RSing them.

The only risk with RS'ing in my opinion is you have to account for injuries and eligibility. I think if they can make the team they should be on it. If you RS a couple of guys thinking your loaded and someone gets hurt or you lose someone to academics you're short. We differ on this but you make a good point. To different philosophies. Like playin poker kinda.

I played against McCarver this past JC season. Hes pretty athletic and should be a 4 guard. We will see what he can do at the higher level this year.

You don't get "caught short," willie. If injuries rear their ugly head, one can always burn a redshirt. The player can always re-redshirt the next season if the staff sees the need.

That's interesting, Sup, if I understand you right. So if for example you and I are both 3's and I'm declared a RS and you go down, are you saying they can undeclare my RS and put me on the roster now that we need a 3? That's what I meant by getting caught short. Whereas, if we are both 3's and we are both on the roster and you go down, I can step in cause I'm on the roster. I doubt if there is even an obscure rule that will allow someone to undeclare an RS. But educate me if you know different.

Willie you can burn a redshirt at any time during the season. It's a matter of weighing your options...

For example last year, Hornets RB Jake Croxdale was injured early in the season and likely would've earned a Medical RS had he sat out the final couple games of the season. Instead, he chose to help out the team and play out the year. A better example is probably a buddy of mine who played baseball at CAL a couple years back. He was a RS FR and played 1B. When a couple guys went down at the very end of his Freshman year, he was given the chance to play or continue along with his RS. He chose to burn his RS for a few ABs because he planned on graduating and moving on to grad school in 4 years anyways.

While the redshirt status may be conferred by a coach at the beginning of the year, it is not confirmed until the end of the season, and more specifically, it does not rule a player ineligible in advance to participate in the season. If a player shows great talent, or there are injuries on the team, the coach may remove the redshirt status and allow the player to participate in competition for the remainder of the year.

However, NCAA rules are quite clear on the use of redshirt status: any participation in any competition counts as a season of eligibility. For example, even a single play in a football game counts as participation for an entire season, so coaches cannot play redshirt players at the end of a game simply to get them some experience.

I stand corrected...
