they'll play with a chip on their shoulder.
From my perspective, which is precisely that-my perspective, it seems like the team has been missing that essence of nastiness. There's a way to be a nasty downright beast within the scope of the game and it shows. And last year it looked like some guys just didn't buy in to it and it hurt our team in a lot of areas. I hope our leaders on the O and D-Lines can play with that type of a mentality. It's an amazing thing when a team can find that nasty mentality and know and believe that every guy on the team is gonna sell out no matter what. The team leaders this year are those kind of guys. I hope they can get everyone else to buy in and go from being good to being great.
Totally agree with you. Weber went from a mean and nasty D, to a cute fluffy defense. We've lost our defensive identity ever since we got a functional offense.
Defense is what Weber was known for before 2008.
WSU has NEVER been historically known for their D in football. Did you ever watch any of the old Dave Steireman or Jamie Martin games? the last team to have the ball won, it was always a shoot out. NO D. WSU has only had 2 Head Coaches that were known as Defensive coaches.
Give me Dave Arslanian's Offense with Mac's Defense and then you would have an awesome team.
Gotta agree with AJ on this one. When you say "Traditionally" you are talking about the historical aspects of a program. Historically speaking Weber has been known as an offensive team. Hell, in the 90s it was a pass the ball 60+ times a game type of team, who knew how to use a Tight End properly.
Defensively, Weber has been very strong only under Mac, there were moments under Graybeal, but if you can't score you don't win. Honestly, I'd rather have a strong offense than a strong defense. At least you know, if you get the ball last you have a chance to win.
Under Mac, what got Weber over the edge? It was spreading out the offense and using all the offensive weapons available to the Cats. Hence a Big Sky championship in 08. Not saying that I don't like defense. Hell, I'm greedy...I wont them to both be dominate, which they have the potential of being.
As for last year, the defense was young, and based upon their inexperience, I thought they had an above average season. This year, I expect a lot more. What worries me now is the offense. The players, and depth, available to the Cats would indicate that Weber could run a pistol offense, or that Weber is keeping the spread scheme. I doubt that will happen. In my opinion, It would be the best possible scenario based upon the type of players. A Smashmouthed scheme would be the worst possible scenario.
