Recruiting Class

From what I can gauge, and believe me that isn't a very easy thing to do, I do believe that Weber State perhaps had the best recruiting class in the Sky this year. The Cats keep brining in talented recruits. Mac has consistently said that the talent on this team are the Sophomores and Freshmen, which should really scare the crap out of the rest of the Big Sky. And then add on this class, which is the best in the Sky, the missionaries coming back (the McBride pipeline is open), and the experienced youth of this team. Wow...the Cats are going to be owning the Sky for a few years to come.

This is going to be a very good year for the 'Cats. Already there is a change in the air, the spirit is different, and they'll play with a chip on their shoulder. Spring training is coming up but they are already working hard in the weight room.

The investment in the off season will pay huge dividends during the season. Now is the time for the boys to get nasty with the iron, during the season it will be a maintenance thing, now is the time to 'go til you blow'.

GO CATS

From my perspective, which is precisely that-my perspective, it seems like the team has been missing that essence of nastiness. There's a way to be a nasty downright beast within the scope of the game and it shows. And last year it looked like some guys just didn't buy in to it and it hurt our team in a lot of areas. I hope our leaders on the O and D-Lines can play with that type of a mentality. It's an amazing thing when a team can find that nasty mentality and know and believe that every guy on the team is gonna sell out no matter what. The team leaders this year are those kind of guys. I hope they can get everyone else to buy in and go from being good to being great.

Totally agree with you. Weber went from a mean and nasty D, to a cute fluffy defense. We've lost our defensive identity ever since we got a functional offense. Defense is what Weber was known for before 2008.

WSU has NEVER been historically known for their D in football. Did you ever watch any of the old Dave Steireman or Jamie Martin games? the last team to have the ball won, it was always a shoot out. NO D. WSU has only had 2 Head Coaches that were known as Defensive coaches.
Give me Dave Arslanian's Offense with Mac's Defense and then you would have an awesome team.

Hmm.. 2007 WSU Total Defense #2, 2006 Total Defense #2, 2005 #4, 2003 #2, so scratching off our 1 win season in 2004 I'd say we were a very defensive minded team. Every team I talked to feared our toughness and nastiness. If you want to talk about 20-30 years ago, well that's before my time.

Gotta agree with AJ on this one. When you say "Traditionally" you are talking about the historical aspects of a program. Historically speaking Weber has been known as an offensive team. Hell, in the 90s it was a pass the ball 60+ times a game type of team, who knew how to use a Tight End properly.

Defensively, Weber has been very strong only under Mac, there were moments under Graybeal, but if you can't score you don't win. Honestly, I'd rather have a strong offense than a strong defense. At least you know, if you get the ball last you have a chance to win.

Under Mac, what got Weber over the edge? It was spreading out the offense and using all the offensive weapons available to the Cats. Hence a Big Sky championship in 08. Not saying that I don't like defense. Hell, I'm greedy...I wont them to both be dominate, which they have the potential of being.

As for last year, the defense was young, and based upon their inexperience, I thought they had an above average season. This year, I expect a lot more. What worries me now is the offense. The players, and depth, available to the Cats would indicate that Weber could run a pistol offense, or that Weber is keeping the spread scheme. I doubt that will happen. In my opinion, It would be the best possible scenario based upon the type of players. A Smashmouthed scheme would be the worst possible scenario.

I never said "traditionally". My point was under Graybeal and until 2008 with Mac, you could hardly call us an offensive-minded team. Our offense couldn't find the endzone if it fell into their laps. It really pissed me off that he said Weber has NEVER been known as having a good defense. As a former player who played on those years where we were #1 or #2 in the conference for total defense, I take offense to that. :tothehand:

bigskychamps is right, I remember not long ago under Graybeal Weber had a tough defense, I remember the likes of Mcfadden and Brady Fosmark, Ty Sparrow and others back when we had Nick Chournos at running back, This was during the time where I started really becoming a fan, back in the late 90's and into the 2000s, Weber had great defenses, but not very spectacular offenses, we always had good running backs, and decent recievers, but we could never get the QB to complete the package.

I stand corrected. Yes, you are absolutely right, except for 2001, Graybeal had some pretty dang stout defenses. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Coach G, and yes, under Mac Weber is always an above average defense team. As for Offense...Yeah, there have times throughout the past 13 years where Weber has struggled to get a first down, let along a TD.

Hey guys I'm excited to play ball up there this year. I report June 13th to start playing ha so hope to see all you guys at the games.

Welcome to the team, James. You'll definitely be seeing me at the games. I'm excited to watch you play for the next several years. You're a big time recruit and along with Connor Myers and the other D lineman recruits coming in this year, that area of the defense should be solid for years to come. :thumb:
