I've known Montana reaches out to the entire state for some time. Like having spring scrimmages in towns like Kalispell. What does Eastern do?

LOL. Glad to see you back clawman. Assume the institution is involved in alumni outreach although I haven't gotten any invites to regular season activities aimed at generating further interest in the football or other programs aka; ticket discounts, parties, celebrity appearances with former local sports studs (Rypien, Sandberg, Stockton et.al). I'm definitely on a list. I think the coaching staff is doing yeoman service in reaching out for recruiting and see all the camps going on this summer. Things like that resonant with people who are football fans. Not sure butts in seats for athletics is a priority at the executive administration level.

I don't know if you remember when WSU did a couple of games in Seattle against non-conference teams in an attempt to build a stronger fan base. Not sure that strategy worked.

Would love to see the stands full every game. Dopa and others have pointed to the decrease in student population. Eastern has lost ground to schools like CWU on that front.

The enrollment is in many ways symptomatic of the larger problem. Athletics thinks of our peers as Montana, Idaho, and UC Davis. Eastern’s administration thinks of our peers as Central Washington and Eastern Oregon. Eastern continues to spend money supporting programs and majors that aren’t utilized. There is so much money wasted that does nothing to draw in students. While many schools spend money trying to improve the student experience, Eastern is pumping money into academic pursuits that don’t attract anyone.

I’ve always thought Eastern’s best bet is to spend heavily in the programs and majors that people are pursuing. If a program isn’t successful, it makes more sense to jettison the program as it isn’t generating a return or even valued by prospective students. Do more with less, and put all energy into growing the student population and getting financially sustainable.

There is no doubt athletics has some issues with spending, but athletics is on a shoestring when compared to many other places. It’s very hard for the anti-athletics crowd to understand why Eastern spends more than Eastern Oregon or Montana State-Western because those are the schools they see as on “our level.”
