Recruits leaving the Program - V2

Anyone with insight into the football program know why we're losing so many recent recruits. We have lost 11 players from the 2009 and 2010 classes - that's almost entire recruiting class! Everyone speaks highly of Sperbecks recruiting, but does it matter if we lose so many? Anyone else concerned?

2010 Recruits MIA
Martinez
Giles
Hanna
Coogler

2009 Recruits MIA
Smith
Barrett
Born
Johnson
Tannenbaum
Briasco
Fesser

As I said before, with the 2009 class, it could have been grades. With the class of 2010, those guys might not have liked the prospect of redshirting so they want to play immediately, so they probably ended up at a JC.

Or some are greyshirting like Carmazzi did in 2008 and was not listed officially that year on the roster.

A recruit leaving is common at all schools. Players leave for various reasons (grades, off-field issues, stupidity, lack of motivation, health) but I agree; it would be nice if this sort of thing is kept to a minimum.

Did they not keep up their grades their senior year? Maybe they didnt qualify after the final HS grades were posted. Another reason is we have limited housing, most big universities have a dedicated athletics dorm which makes the change easier to adopt. If you recall, it is a major life event turning 18/19 and moving away from the safe confines of home. If you go to a big university that is the size of some towns and have to live off campus alot is lost and home sickness sets in. Or as stated they thought they would play immediately or they just wanted to prove to themselves that they could get a schollie to a D1 football program and arent prepared for the work and emotional toll it requires to be successful at this level.

Unfortunately we are not like the Ivy or Patriot league where most classes are five years and the graduation rate is 98% witht he same retention.

What was the retention under Moose or Volek? I'd have to say worse.

Thanks for bringing up this topic. I was moderately concerned as well, however, I think general attrition due in part to injuries / personal decisions / grades account for most of this movement. The attrition percentage as a whole is probably pretty average. I read that Briasco had an injured shoulder that did not respond to rehab. Born transferred to a JC. Schablaske transferred to ARC. Kenslow Smith was injured and very deep on the depth chart and is now the starting running back for the University of San Diego.
