Other sites report verbal commitments by 2012 crop of talent. Eastern does not seem to release that info. Do you think they are keeping quite as a strategy or don't get any of those early commitments?

clawman,
Drop an email to Coach Hayford, let him know you would like to be on the 6th Man Club. I did and I have gotten about three emails of what is going on. I think there were approximately 17 Players he mentioned, of course some will be RS for a year or so. Vic

By NCAA rule, Eastern can't release any commitment information until LOI day. Any information out there regarding verbals must come from the players themselves.

Or scouting services such as rivals.com

Which do a poor job on FCS schools in general. Funny, but on a lot of those recruiting sites any recruit that signs with an FCS school is dropped to a 1 or 2 star recruit. Grain of salt.

Exactly. If you knew the type of people who make these rankings, most are affiliated with a particular university (either by attendance or by geography) and lots of them have not played a single snap of football in their lives. Nice people, but often times clueless. Like you said, Ranger, grain of salt.

I'm gonna disagree with that (except for a couple douchebags at Dawgman.com and that's coming from a life-long Husky fan).

When discussing the recruiting sites you're basically talking about two... Scout.com and Rivals.com. I can't speak for Rivals but I know many of the Scout guys on a first name basis, having worked with them on a few things over the years and they do a fantastic job given the amount of players they watch. The West Regional Manager for Scout (pretty much everything but Texas west of the Mississippi) is Brandon Huffman. He's also one of their four National Analysts. Brandon played football, worked for an NFL agent after college, and has been in the HS recruiting business for as long as anybody. He's a fantastic judge of football talent.

A lot of the rumors about downgrading "stars" are just that, rumors. There is NO formula for automatically taking someone's star away for committing to a FCS school. They do their jobs well enough that you just don't see many 3 stars playing at FCS schools. Check out Bijon Samoodi who was a 3 Star two years ago coming out of HS. Top 50 cornerback in the country, All-State in California, two FBS offers, two FCS offers. Chose Cal Poly. Never lost the star...

Fun Facts about Huff... When taking over as the head West Coast guy, he refused to be relocated to Southern California, where he's from, but rather remained here in Washington. A couple of really good friends of Brandon's in the Big Sky are Jonathan Smith, OC at Montana, and our very own Coach Jim Hayford. Oh, and me...!! :D

Not to discount their work but I wonder if schools buy into the star rating system so much that the IA teams will recruit these kids more heavily?

No... every school breaks down their own kids, and a lot of time the assessment is totally different.

This is especially noticeable with 3 star kids, some of whom have a boatload of BCS offers and some have maybe a couple FCS offers and a couple lower-tier FBS offers.

The star ratings almost always favor kids from city leagues who have made the bigger camp circuit. Mansell Simmons was a good example of a ridiculously overrated 3-star kid last year. I think he had one FBS offer and only a couple FCS offers.

That's a good question. I can tell you this, though... A picture of Steve Sarkisian at his first meeting with his entire coaching staff around a table on the front page of the Seattle Times showed a copy of a Scout.com story that week by Huffman on the table in front of each of the coaches. Got a good chuckle out of that...
