Red White Spring Game Impressions

My impression after watching the Spring game is that The Defense is a whole lot better than it was the last few years. Obviously they have hit the weight room and some of these players look really impressive. The biggest take away was that they really got after it.

Andre Lino looks impressive, he has obviously added weight and it wouldn't surprise me if he made one of the All American teams

The linebackers look to be the best EWU has had in a long time. Calhoun and Beckering have also added some size and played really well. All of the LB's played well, may want to look at playing a 4-3 to take advantage of some really good athletes.

Nzuzi Webster looked impressive as well. I think the WR's may have won the afternoon against the DB's but not by much.

Gage Gubrud may have solidified his starting status, he seemed to be in control of the offense. We'll definitely need a mobile QB until the OL matures. The OL looks big but I think the DL and LB's won the battle up front.

None of the starting WR's played but the backups didn't miss a beat. The passing game will be big this year and it will have to be because I'm not sure we will get enough of a push up front to get the running game going until the OL gets more experience. The OL did have their moments but in another year they may be one of the best units in FCS.

Hopefully these guys keeps hitting the weight room because they looked much more physical than years past.

I saw some really good things yesterday and walked away pretty optimistic about the upcoming season! Gubrud really solidified himself as the guy to beat heading into fall. He took the most snaps by a lot and I was especially impressed by just how quick he is. Without any of the starting receivers, it was hard to tell how they would all gel, but I'm telling you right now, there are some up and coming stars. I think Jayson Williams is poised to dominate. We've not had a receiver that big in quite some time and he can motor!

On the defensive side, I walked away very impressed with the speed and much sounder tackling of the D. That's not something we've been accustomed to seeing lately. Webster looked like a stud on the outside and the DL got push on every play. They were giving fits to the OL with stunts and were in the backfield all day. Some of that is probably the inexperienced OL, but it's still good to see.

Overall, I would say it was a good day. Not the best weather, but still a great turnout from Eagle Nation. This team has a lot of potential and seems to be a step quicker on both sides of the ball. Can't wait for fall!

GO EAGS!

1) Gage good (will have to learn how to say his last name).
2) Reilly/Jordan are already good.
3) Will need all three as they will be scrambling for their lives.
4) Amazing that the new crop of WR's is so dang good...wow.
5) Dline I hope is good and that it's not that our Oline is...
6) LB's look quick.
7) DB's have a good sense of timing.
8) Concerned about negative yards rushing in last two scrimmages...I mean really concerned.
9) The D hits so hard I felt some of those pops.
10) Was the big news that they are going to paint the basketball court red cause recruits will want to play there?

To All,
I agree with all your comments. I sat in my little chair away from the sidelines, in case I had to escape. :) With Receivers, #10 Cooper Kupp, #11 Kendrick Bourne, #7 Nic Sblendorio, #83 Jalani Phelps, out of the game, #14, Jason Williams, #80 Zach Eagle, #81 Stu Stiles, #88 Terence Grady became men amongst men. I knew they had it in themselves to shine when called upon to do so, and as most of you have seen, they made a rise to the top. The entire game was a well played. That young QB from McMinnville, Ore #15 Gage Gurub, established himself. Coach will make his decision who will be #1, I will live with it. We are not there yet, but I felt that we are where we should be at this stage. ewueagle2010 glad to have met you at the Lobster Feed last night. And thanks for your kind words. This University got me to where I am today, and I will never forget that. I did have fun looking at the ones feeling good :) attempting to dance. We had approximately 10 of the Walk-ons on the Playing Roster, and all came through. Look forward to the coming season, and hope to meet more of you, "Gods Will". Happy Sunday to all. Vic Wallace

Enjoyed seeing the Big Crowd we had at the Red/White Game even with the weather. Bad weather cannot keep "The Eagle Fans Away". We love our Eagles, Win or Lose. Vic
