Refreshing candor

As I slammed my fist down on the arm of my chair during yesterday's game, I couldn't ascertain if the Viks just aren't fast enough, athletic enough, smart enough, or if the defensive game plan was just poorly thought out or not executed. Well, I guess we have the answer courtesy of quotes in today's putrid excuse for a rag (yes, that's a dig at the O). I'd love though to be present at practice on Monday!

From coach -
"It was an utter breakdown in discipline on every single front," Burton said of his defense. "And it will be corrected. Utter means everything. It didn't matter what was called. It was not executed in the fashion in which we expected.

"I could not be more disappointed in the way we played on the defensive side of the ball."

From player -
"It was big plays, just playing undisciplined," Portland State linebacker Ian Sluss said. "Some guys just didn't do their jobs. I felt like here and there we were playing some good football. One of our goals is to stop big plays, because big plays can ruin a game easily."

Yes, our defense ate it. Couldn't be more disappointed. But consider - we led in nearly every statistical category. Even in passing yardage, though there were two interceptions. With a better pass defense, we would have won handily. Fernandez did a great backup job. The two he missed were blocked, not missed. This wasn't a blow out, by any means. Just very very messy. Marty, you remember you said we'd probably take another year to be very good? You were right.

Yes, I loved the candor in coach's comments. Any clues about why Karrington Jones didn't get more of a look once the DB debacle started? I see Kincy is wearing #5 now. What number is Tatum, and did he travel?

I think we may have a dominating offense in this conference for this year and next. Right now defense looks like it will be an unpredictable soap opera, "When it's good its very very good, and when it's not...."
