Renard Williams' Draft Stock

Is looking pretty good. If he can bring it all next year like he did in the playoffs this last year, he might be able to sneak into the 2nd round. Right now he's projected 3rd-4th round as the 8th best DT.

DEFENSIVE TACKLES
Grade: Average

Kheeston Randall (Texas) 6-5/295/4.98/1-2
Tydreke Powell (North Carolina) 6-3/310/5.06/2
Josh Chapman (Alabama) 6-1/310/5.09/2
Brandon Thompson (Clemson) 6-2/310/5.30/2-3
Alameda Ta'amu (Washington) 6-3/330/5.29/2-3
Kendall Reyes (Connecticut) 6-4/298/4.93/3
Jaye Howard (Florida) 6-3/302/4.93/3
Armond Armstead (USC) 6-5/295/4.97/3
Renard Williams (Eastern Washington) 6-2/298/5.18/3-4
Logan Harrell (Fresno State) 6-2/278/4.92/4

Underclassmen

Marcus Forston (Miami, Fla.) 6-3/305/4.95/1-2
Jerel Worthy (Michigan State) 6-3/305/5.04/1-2

No one saw Auburn tackle Nick Fairley becoming the dominant player he was in the 2010 season before the season began. Forston has the explosiveness to become that sort of player, but he, Randall, Worthy, Powell, or someone else will need to step up to land in the top half of the draft's first round. There is some depth in the top 100 with Thompson continuing Clemson's history of producing tackles and Chapman a Casey Hampton-type nose tackle prospect. Ta'amu's combination of size, strength and agility will certainly intrigue scouts. Armstead is moving to tackle for the Trojans this year, and could get top 100 consideration, along with high-motor prospect Harrell and highly-productive FCS star Renard Williams.

Technically, they have him 9th... not 8th. But he'd actually be 11th if the two undies come out.

I'd bet a lot of NFL evaluators will be watching him and the Hawaiian kid at the UW game.

Renard will impress a lot of people on his pro day. The same spring day a few years back when I saw TJ run his 4.29, Renard ran a high 4.7.

I wonder where sites like this get their times from? I remember one site earlier in the year had TJ running a 4.5.

The link I quoted from (2nd one) has him 9th, the first link has him 8th.

Renard's challenge this year will be to put forth a consistent effort from game to game. When he wants to Renard can change the complexion of the game all by himself. There was a world of difference between his performance versus UM and then what he did versus MSU.

It looked like he really turned it on during your playoff run and if he can bring that effort every game next season he should get drafted in the top 4 rounds in next years draft easily.

Well said - I agree.

I think in the past - maybe before last year - the main criticism of Renard was what was at least perceived to be consistency. He didn't play well against MSU, although to be honest that could have been said about the entire team. I hate having to play MSU right after Montana every year.

Anyway, during the second half of the season, and particularly during the playoff run, he was unstoppable at times. He was incredible against NDSU, owned Nova's vaunted O-Line and made several crucial plays during the championship game that led to UD having to punt.

I think at times he does get frustrated with the double-teams. However, this year, from what I have seen and heard, it's going to be more difficult for opposing teams to put a double team on Renard.

If there is some inconsistency it makes you wonder about his work ethic. Is he really humping it this spring and summer?

I've heard it's not so much his work ethic but his weight room ethic. He "brings it" on the field every play. The problem is that he can't take an entire game worth of snaps because his cardio isn't as good as it should be. He also could carry quite a bit more muscle for a guy of his size.

These knocks on when comparing him to other NFL-quality guys... so take them with a grain of salt. But if millions of $$$ are on the line, I hope he finds the dedication to correct his flaws.
