• Hi Guest,

We've updated the site to combine all the forums that were part of the Big Sky Fans Network into one location. This will make it easier to navigate and participate in all the discussions for each school without having to have multiple accounts, etc. We are still working out some tweaks but please let us know if you notice anything.

With the migration, in some circumstances, your username could have been merged with one of your other usernames from the other forums. If this is the case, you can request to change your username in your account details page of your profile.

Mark,

I appreciate your effort at getting a fan forum up and running. NAU has a pretty respectable recent history of being competitive in mens basketball but the pulse of community support always seemed lacking (at least when I lived in Flagstaff...don't know if that's changed any....will find out at Thursdays U of M game on my annual 1 day trip to Flagstaff).

Living in Montana now but I'll try to check in on this forum on occasion.

Best of luck. Go Jacks!

AggieJack,

What is it about Flagstaff or NAU that the support from my point of view seems to be lacking? U live there, what can you say about it?

Especially since NAU has won 2 str8 titles and working on a 3rd. Why does the community not seem to be excited. Do they not like sports? Do they only go hiking? Do they only like the Wildcats & Sundevils?

We need the NAU faithful to be aware of this board.

Hey this is mike, im a member of the NAU JACK PACK. NAU's student booster club/student section which will be the best in the big sky. Who all uses this fan blog? Anyone that currently goes to NAU??? What are the student sections like at other schools in the big sky, does anyone know???? alright thats it for now, take care

To the members of the Jack Pack: Keep working on building up student support. The last game I attended when students were present was the swift blow to the groin that was the BSC championship two years ago against the Grizzlies. Heartbreak from that evening aside, I was impressed with the turnout . Consistent student/community support can occur in Flagstaff. It's an uphill battle against all of the Phoenix pro sports, ASU, U of A and SoCal team fan support that make up the bulk of students in Flagstaff. Apathy reigned amidst the student population when I was in Flagstaff but there's no reason that should be the case. Convince a few dorm/apt./class acquaintances into going to a game, throw a few pints back before hand (college kids still do that on occasion, right?), jump up and down, yell, be "reasonably" obnoxious and grab your precious few years of college life by the testicles and above all - have fun. If you build it...they will come.

From my prospective its a total lack of public knowledge. If you want to know what is going on you have to practically seek it out, its not in your face, like it is other places. Marketing is lacking both on campus and in town, and largely one person does it all. I think the paper does a nice job of covering football, but its just not that much exposure. Lack of exposure= lack of awareness= lack of fans.

I think you might be right. My first year at NAU, I never attended any of the games. I didn't even know where they played. It wasn't until my junior year at NAU when the 05-06 men's basketball team started winning and getting some attention that I started to notice NAU athletics and became proud of our sport teams. I attended the basketball games and loved the atmosphere and the way our team was playing. That enthusiasm spread to the rest of the other sports and by my senuor year I attended all home sporting events and cheered our teams as loud as I could. I have to say that my senior year was by far the funnest and NAU athletics had alot to do with that. If it hadn't been for that 05-06 team with Kelly Golob, Steve Sir, Ruben Boykin, Kyle Landry, and Josh Wilson, I would have never caught on to the whole NAU athletic events. They really need to create a buzz at the campus and in the community. We have some of the more competitive teams in the Big Sky, but I think the students and the community don't know that. Somebody needs to do a better job communicating advertising NAU athletics to the people in Flagstaff.

Well, I can't say I'm going to follow this format, but it seems like this thread has seen the most activity, so here goes.

My name's Josh, and as you can probably guess my handle I went to JMU for undergrad. I'm from DC and live there now, currently working in a research lab and have been accepted to NAU for grad school. I'm hoping somebody will see this in the next two weeks and could give me some answers, so here goes:

1) How is the grad school program thought of in general?
2) I did the whole drinking thing in undergrad and know that certain apartments are hot spots for it. Are there any apartment complexes around Flagstaff that are mostly grad students/little quieter?
3) Is there any team with a realistic shot at knocking Montana off this year? We get very little information out east about the western teams and don't know much other than Weber State beat them and I would love to see them come back to Bridgeforth for the loss they should have had in December.

Thanks for any help you guys can give in advice about the school, town, whatever.

Welcome JMU Dukes

1) I assume you are in some sort of biology/research? If so, NAU has a very well respected research program.

2) Can't help you on that - been too long since I looked for a place like that.

3) NAU hosts Montana this year, so better chance, but Souers has never beaten his old school. NAU has a good core coming back, so should have a good team.

There will be a bunch of posters from www.championshipsubdivision.com (the associated FCS board for this site) having a get together for the NAU-Montana game - the thread about it is the "Lumberjack Revenge" People from Montana, UMass, Applachian State and others will be there.

Yes, I am going in for biology. We currently collaborate with the guys there, so I knew the strength and respect their research program has, but wondering more on strength of the actual school.

I occasionally skim there and AGS, but there's too many Appies and Montana fans on there for my taste - I usually stick to the JMU boards. Thanks for the reply and the welcome!

Which is why we need more non UM/ASU posters at cs.com

NAU has a number of nationally recognized programs - forestry, education, hotel/restaurant management are all top 20 (if not top 10).

Business school has developed a pretty good reputation as well. A lot of cutting edge research in microbiology, etc.

Ah, no thanks, between "Armanti will win Heismann" and "East Coast Bias", it ain't really worth it to me. Besides, they both troll our boards enough for me to get my fill of them.
