Rough game today, glad to win

The bad news is we didn't play well... or at least we sure didn't play a full 60 minutes.

The good news is that even playing that bad, we were still good enough to win.

I thought Davis played really well, Wright was making big throws almost all game and their big back Turay was pounding out yardage.. he must've run for half his yardage after contact.

Eastern spent the entire first half wasting possessions when we should have been building a big lead. There were ridiculous penalties, missed tackles, and a lot of dropped passes (Greg Herd and Brandon Kaufman had some egregious drops). Yet we got it together just enough to win. I was hoping we left that mentality of just doing enough in Utah when we lost down there, but it reared it's ugly head today.

The way we were running the ball early in the game, I was disappointed that we didn't stick with it. Oh well, that would have been an absolute disaster to lose, and we found a way.

There was an absolute trainwreck behind Eastern today as teams ranked 6, 8, 9, and 11 all lost to unranked teams. I'm shocked that Stony Brook lost to Liberty because they looked like they were on cruise control. Glad as hell Southern Utah beat NAU. That SUU team is jekyll-and-hyde. For all their mediocre performances this season, they hold three huge wins against Montana, Eastern, and NAU.

It was ugly, but I love that the D regrouped and allowed only 3 in the second half. The cold definitely played a role. It was around 20 degrees when we left Cheney. Also, it's a luxury to have 2 good QBs to rely on. The pass from Padron to Herd for the score in the 3rd was money.

Agreed, as was the pass to Herd in the 4th. Sucks that it bounced right off his chest.

This coaching staff desperately needs to learn how to run the clock. That possession late in the 4th when they should have been running clock, yet decided to run a gadget play and go deep was horrendous.
Week in and week out this coaching staff has failed at killing clock. That is going to catch up to us... it almost did today.

That said. Great win today.

Go Eags! :thumb:

Play-calling has been questionable all year long. Baldwin tries to get cute too often.

Agree on yesterday's gadget play, but before that, I was just thinking how few trick plays, reverses, etc we seem to run.

One other point about the game. I thought it was really cool how our P.A. announcer at the beginning of the game asked for an ovation for Davis's coach Biggs who is retiring at the end of the season.

Glad to win, but definitely wondering how many of those games we can survive. It seems like we follow up a great performance with a less than stellar one. I don't expect that we will be blowing every team we play out of the water, but we will need better consistency if we are going to make it past the first round in the playoffs. The PSU game will be huge - with so much on the line for the Eags, it will be veey telling if the Eags come out un-focused. After what MSU did to the Vikings, I think we need to beat them soundly quantify our case for a higher seed. I hope the team has a great practice this weekend and starts getting into the playoff mentality now.

We really need to clean-up the mistakes and getting things rolling; next week is as good a time as any.

On a different note, it is really nice to have another qb to go to when we need a spark. It is evident that Adams lacks the confidence that comes with experience. He was throwing behind guys and his body language was telling. In several games you see Adams grabbing his head or practicing his throwing motion on the field when he is a bit off. It seems like being able to sit him for a few series calms him down.

Very true. Experience can be more important than talent sometimes. Not only is it great though that Padron can come in, it's great having Padron (and Meyer, Hill, & Baldwin) there to help coach him up and impart his experience to him.

Very exciting game, to say the least. Can anyone tell me what was going on in the second quarter where everything seemed wide open for UCD down the middle of the EWU defense? Obviously great adjustments were made at halftime, as the defense shut them down second half. And, since I never played the game, is it really difficult to make substantive defensive adjustments on the fly? It seems like halftime is when these things are done.

Again, kudos to the players and coaches. There is no quit in this team.

For as bad as we played Saturday, we are still 8-2 and 5th in the country. If we win at PSU, we will crack the top 4, probably the top 3 and will be deserving of a seed.

Sometimes you have to win ugly, and we have found a way to do that this year...

Last year, our passing game carried us to 6 wins. This year we're trying to balance the run and pass, and rightfully so. However, I think some of these "ugly" wins are really just the result of experimentation. I'm almost convinced that if we were to come out guns blazing from the first snap and send four or five receivers deep downfield on every down, these ugly wins would be blowouts. Could it be Baldwin knows exactly when to flip the switch in order to win? What do you do if you're matched up against the Eagles a week after Thanksgiving (assuming we can handle the Vikings) in Cheney? Is this an EWU team that's all about balance, or one that's used balance to get into the playoffs, then light up the scoreboard?
