Sac State & S Utah: conference play resumes

And it's none too soon. Good to see NAU's bear of a non-conference schedule complete. The Jacks can compete with the Big Sky squads but not so much with the Colorado, BYU, UNLV and U of A's.

Driving up from the desert for next Thursday's game vs. Sacramento State. Hope NAU's guards can regain their shooting touch. Sacramento State is much improved and my darkhorse choice to win the conference should WSU and UM falter.

I don’t think we are that good, we certainly haven’t showed we can compete for the top spot but if the Hornet offense can find its groove I think we have the potential to compete. Road wins are hard to come by in the BSC and it’s going to be tough for the Hornets to pull down a win in Flagstaff this week.

With SUU tied at the top of the conference with Weber and Montana early, this would be a great oportunity to knock them off and have the guys get some confidence. We should be able to compete with Souther Utah, specially at home. This is a winnable game. Let's see what happens. Russel continues to impress. He should be a lock for newcomer of the year. Still waiting for Rogers to dominate a little more. A Russel/Rogers 1-2 punch could win us a lot of games in the conf. this year.

I caught the Sacramento State game on Thursday night with four relatives and friends. I did my part to bring some fans but, yet again, another lackluster turnout on a cold night. The Big Sky conference gets the gas face for scheduling all of these conference games when the students are all gone.

NAU stepped up their defensive effort and held a Hornets team averaging 70+ points to 50 points. That was impressive. Shooting percentage on offense has been lacking, they're still relying too much on their two big scorers (Russell and Rogers....who are slumping a bit with their shot), that consistent third scoring option still hasn't materialized and post/rebounding presence isn't a strong point.

But...NAU is 2-1 in conference and have matched last years win total. The defensive and overall effort has been positive more often than not this season. Coach Murphy and staff have the team playing hard. Dewayne Russell has a first step and lateral quickness that is rare in a conference like the Big Sky. Hell of a catch on Coach Murphy's part. There's lots to be excited for. Starting 3-1 in conference would be nice before a long four game road stretch.

Watching today's game on Fox Sports Arizona.

This is what I get for being positive.

Mental focus and defensive effort was lacking today. Dumb fouls. Missed free throws. One of the worst three point shooting games I've seen from an NAU team. NAU won't win another game this year if they continue to shoot that poorly from behind the arc.

The Jacks looked young and frustrated today. SUU won't finish is last or second to last place as the coaches and writers predicted.
