Sac State would have to move tournament...

Just FYI, passed this along to Brad although I don't know if he used it in the broadcast Saturday.

When in Sacramento was told last week by Sac. State Sports Information that if the Hornet men win the Big Sky regular season title, the post season tournament can't be played in their gym (aka the Hornet's Nest...) It simply doesn't have the space or capabilities needed for ESPN to televise the championship game. It would have to be moved.

Was told it would probably go to Cal-Davis which is Sac State's biggest rival. That would be unfortunate for the Hornet players to be sure.

Since the women's tournament is no longer televised by a regional or cable outlet it would remain in that gym should the Sac. State women go on to win the regular season title.

Apparently Cal Davis is not available either, and Reno is being considered.

I hope our administration is finally forced to face their failure to address this problem a long time ago....The season is far from over but I'd like to see them squirm about this some more....will be a real shame if the second place team has to host because the Sac St administration wouldn't do the right thing in 2004 and build an events center...classic administrative failure, too busy holding on to their own asses to do the right thing...

If Sacramento State wins the regular season, it appears the conference is leaning toward Reno...

Sacramento State appears finally to have found an arena capable of hosting the Big Sky Conference men’s basketball tournament.

It’s in Reno.

Unable to find a suitable location in the greater Sacramento area, Big Sky officials are leaning toward hosting the annual postseason championship tournament at the Reno Events Center if California State University, Sacramento, winds up as host team. The center, a block east of the city’s major casino hotels, seats 4,500 for basketball and can be expanded to just more than 5,000, arena officials said.

(Big Sky Senior Associate Deputy Commissioner Ron ) Loghry said he toured three sites late last week with CSUS officials: a conference center at McClellan Park, Delta College in Stockton and the Reno facility. In his report back to league Commissioner Doug Fullerton, he said the McClellan and Stockton venues, with about 3,000 seats each, were inadequate.

Ron Loghry, the deputy commissioner of the Big Sky Conference recently said that he's going back to Sacramento to look at a proposal by Sac. State to temporarily turn an area on campus into a 3-4 thousand seat "arena" in the event Sac. State wins the men's regular season.

It's currently the student wellness center. Originally it was supposed to be the home for a new arena but that plan was shot down and turned into what it is today.

Problem solved if they win it:

Not true, the students passed a referendum for a rec and wellness center AND an events center in 2004. The events center (for reasons still unclear about today) was not constructed, the rec center (aka The Well) was built. It’s a nice facility and if we do hang on I’m glad we found a place on campus, but this in no way alleviates the need for a new events center.

It’s cool. I wouldn’t be surprised if our outgoing President did try to convert the rec center into the event center after he failed to follow through with the student vote. Nothing would surprise me at this point regarding this issue. I just know (as a student at the time that voted for it) that the vote was for both facilities, and not one or the other.

I have to admit, I'm pulling for Sacramento State to host -- just so I can see how they pull this off..!

Should the Hornets win the Big Sky Conference regular-season title Thursday or Saturday, Sac State will have a makeshift, 2,700-seat arena built in three days inside their bustling campus recreation and health center, The Well. There, the school will host the eight-team, seven-game postseason conference tournament March 12-14.

Starting as early as Saturday night, workers will begin the transformation. They will lay down a 94-foot-by-50-foot basketball floor, newly painted with the Hornets’ and Big Sky logos. On opposite sides, two 1,338-seat, 26-row bleachers will be constructed.

Risers will be built to house TV cameras. Tarp will cover the entire gym floor so fans can bring in food and drink from food trucks that will line the route from the Hornet Stadium entrance to the back of The Well, where fans will enter.

Me too. I like to see the underdogs rise up and have their day in the sun. I also get tired of all the condescending comments about Sac specifically, and the Big Sky in general, from some of the knuckleheads on the Montana message board. So the last place I want to see both the men's and women's tournaments is in Missoula. Go Hornets, you will be my second favorite team this weekend.

Thanks for your support and I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised if we host.....except for the fans who only think the tournament would better if it were hosted by the team closest to their house....that seems to be the feelings of UI and EWU and MU fans (and I do mean MU)....
