SacBee - WTF

So I get back into the office this morning and thumb through this past weekends newspapers. Zero on Sac State, or any colleges outside of P5 level in Sunday or Monday’s paper. Usually there is a small blurb which is pretty much a copy paste of the Hornetsports release, but now it looks like they are too lazy (and incompetent) to even do that. The kicker was the list of scores for Saturday’s college games, they had ours listed as “late” so no score was posted. How the hell is a local 6PM kickoff too late such that the final doesn’t get posted by press time? Checked online and they have nothing there as well on either of the local programs.

This is a new low for the SacBee and it reaffirmed why I never considered subscribing since I have moved back into the area, and never will subscribe in the future. What a fvcking joke that paper is. :ohno:

They changed everything up when they did their remodel a few months ago. Basically, they have a hard deadline around 8 pm for stories now, maybe even earlier. You are gonna see less recaps in sports and just general interest pieces every now and then. There is going to be way less content...it's the death march of the newspaper industry, continuing.

Everybody calm down, the sun will rise tomorrow. We've had this conversation going over a decade and obviously nothing changes at the Bee except pink slips. Within the next 5 years the Bee will be reduced to a weekly coupon mailer running just wire stories and the occasional story on the Bay Area teams or a local HS kid who made it 'big' in the city and blew out his knee in the first game.

But can you blame the Bee for lack of in-depth, dedicated coverage? I mean the local HS team just unveiled its new football stadium and the good 'ol local arts college still has portable stadium bleachers and a gym that doubles as an asbestos superfund candidate. If the school doesn't take it's sports more seriously than that, than why should the Bee?

Supposedly things are changing at Sac State......the Bee might not be around to see it.

Poor facilities aren’t a legitimate excuse for lack of coverage, not when almost 12k shows up to the home opener, and not when Hornet football has been competitive for the better part of the last decade. It’s just straight laziness and incompetence on the Bee’s behalf.

BTW since you’re unhappy with the state of our facilities, have you ponied up for the events center funding effort yet?

It has a direct correlation. If you don't invest in something why do you think it should pay a dividend?

When you have limited resources, you spread it where/who pays the bills. The only free coverage the Bee provides is the HS groupies and they pay by being en masse for readership. All the soccer, River Cats, Kings are also a direct correlation of those entities giving the Bee $$$ for coverage.

Why so sour towards me, I wonder if we are on the same team anymore.

Not sour, just curious if someone who constantly bitches and moans about the state of our facilities (I'm guilty of this) actually puts his money where his mouth is (also guilty of this). :thumb:

The story I wrote for the Sacramento Bee
Sac State battles briefly before losing fifth in a row

on the online version of the Bee, it used to be relatively easy to get to the latest Sac or Davis story from the 'college' tab. i think they used to have sub-tabs for the 2 locals as well as Cal and Stanford. Now? If you go there today and want to read about last Saturday's games, how do you do it? Any post-game or pre-game stories from either side of the Causeway? Not that I can find. From a distance, the coverage has been greatly reduced.

i was passing through town on the way back from the Reno game and bought a Bee thinking there would be a story. granted, it was a 7:00 kickoff, but no mention of anything. i was wondering who Sac started the season off with and just assumed there'd be a story the day before the game (we played on Thursday night). Nope. Lots of high school previews, no mention of the local colleges.

Seems like the reduction of local college coverage is directly proportional to the infatuation with local high school football.

The Sac Bee coverage of Hornet football has not changed in many decades.

The Hornet football coverage is minimal unless we beat a Pac 12 team or unless it is the Davis/ Sac State game.

We did, however, seem to get lots of coverage of Hornet basketball last year.

A Sac State sports program must have a big winning season to get some coverage by the Bee.

Sad with all the excellent Sac State journalism program graduates at the Bee.

And then there is the reality of print newspapers fading in in the world today.

i ride BART to work each day to SF and back to my home in Martinez area and it is very, very rare to see anyone holding an actual newspaper in their hand. Everyone is reading everything on line in their hand on their cell phones.
