Sacramento Arena

With the imminet vacancy of the Kings and the city of Sacramento owning $35M ARCO Arena (refuse to call it Power Balance whatever) with no tenant, is it feasible to think that Sac State could somehow relocate all home games there? Since the arena is deemed not NBA worthy, why not reduce seating to make it more college game friendly and a home to the hometown team?

The city will never fill it with another NBA team, so why not use what we have since no arena will ever be built on campus.

That's certainly possible, though I'd question the move over a cost-to-benefit analysis: the rent would likely be too high for a place that would likely look like an empty cave (at least at first). Plus, there would be the cost of transporting the team across town for every game. Even in the POS we call the Hornet's Nest, at least we don't have those costs, plus we can attract a FEW dormies and assorted other people.

Besides filling a stretch van with gas, there is relatively little cost. What rent, the city wont have a tenant? Name our price. If it means being considered for the WAC then why not?

If the city is smart, they will rent out Arco for no less than the operating costs and insurance cots needed to let Sac State use it. SD had the same thing go down with the Aztecs in their negations with their football team leasing Qualcomm. SD has no problem renting Qualcomm to SDSU, but they didn’t cut SDSU any special deal as the city ultimately has to cover operating expenses and other costs associated with the use of the stadium.

Sure Arco won’t have any tenants, but it would be much cheaper for the city to shutter up Arco and let is sit dormant then to let Sac State rent Arco for less than the cost to keep the doors open. On top of all that, there still has to be money available for the department/program to rent Arco. And on top of that, enough people will have to want to go see Hornet hoops at Arco so that Sac State can at least break even on the deal.

SD makes a very good point. One has to factor in utilities, vendor costs, parking and clean-up staff, etc. A place that size can't be run on volunteers (even volun-tolds from other Hornet teams) alone. The city (which is already haemorrhaging people left and right) can't afford to rent the place to Sac State at a pittance. Even base-cost will be big for the athletic department. I think SD hit it on the nose here.

Thinking about it further, there is no reason the Hornets have to play EVERY home game at Arco. Obviously the BSC conference match-ups the casual fan doesn’t give a damn about could be in the Nest, but maybe playing in Arco can be some leverage into getting some home and home OOC games against well known schools. Would Cal, Stanford, Nevada, Fresno State, St. Mary’s, and any other decent program that has a shot of drawing fans consider a home and home with the stipulation that the game in Sac would be in Arco? If any of these schools heavily recruit the Sac area, they could be interested in this and that could be an angle the department works. Other than that I don’t see how the 300 fans a matchup with Idaho State draws would pay the rent in Arco.

Not that you guys like to hear about the guys down I-5, but SD brings up an idea that UOP has had the last couple of years. It doesn't look like it's going to work out this year, but they recently had Cal (a big regional name) in for a game at Stockton Arena (where the minor league Stockton Thunder hockey team plays and the former Stockton Lighning AF2 team played). They're looking to continue that idea if they can find a school that will commit to that. Theoretically, Sac COULD do a one-game shot at Power Balance Pavilion. But DEFINITELY not the whole schedule.

Nice call, SD. Just like always.

The Maloof's own the arena and the surrounding land and they would probably tear the thing down and try to sell it all to a developer. Now if they default on their loan to the city, the city would own the arena and the land.

If the city took over, they might operate it. One of the reason's Sac St left Memorial was because they couldn't practice there very often and they didn't feel they had a "home court" advantage. Katz might not want to use it for the same reason unless he could practice out there. We need every bit of "home court" advantage we can get!

Speculation is they will default once they are in Anaheim. It’s just like all those people who chose to walk away from their mortgage even though they had the ways and mean to pay it. :twocents:
