Sacramento State plans to hire Brian Katz, the head coach at San Joaquin Delta College, as its new men's head basketball coach, The Bee has learned.

University of Washington assistant Cameron Dollar and Cabrillo College head coach Tony Marcopulos said they'd received phone calls Wednesday afternoon informing them they were not the choice, leaving Katz as the pick.

Dollar, Katz and Marcopulos were the three candidates who interviewed for the job last week. A source familiar with the search confirmed Katz was getting the job.

"I'm no longer in the running," Dollar said Wednesday afternoon.

Marcopulos also said he'd been told he wasn't landing the job.

"I was just informed about 10 minutes ago I'm not the guy," Marcopulos said.

Athletics director Terry Wanless and Katz could not be immediately reached for comment.

Katz, 50, replaces Jerome Jenkins, whose contract was not renewed after a 4-24 season. Jenkins compiled an 80-147 record in eight seasons at Sacramento State, taking the Hornets to four consecutive Big Sky Conference Tournaments before missing the six-team event the last two seasons.

Katz, a Sacramento State graduate, owns a 348-138 record at Delta. In his 15 seasons at the Stockton school, the Mustangs have reached the playoffs 14 times and won six conference titles.

A Casa Roble High School graduate, Katz also posted an 87-47 record in four seasons at the head coach at Lassen College in Susanville. He worked as an assistant at Santa Clara from 1987 to 1989 and was the head coach at Center High School from 1983 to 1987, compiling a 53-34 record and earning three trips to the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

The new coach will face plenty of challenges. The Hornets play in a 1,200-seat gym, averaged 583 spectators per game in 2007-08 and finished the season 335th out of 341 Division I teams in Ratings Percentage Index, a gauge of team strength.

Sac State has not enjoyed a winning season since joining Division I in 1991, with a 15-15 effort in 2005-2006 its best record.

The spring signing period begins next Wednesday. The Hornets have not had a local player on their roster since former Grant High School standout Jameel Pugh, a transfer from the University of Massachusetts, played for Sac State in 2004-05.

Well, there you go. Congrats to Coach Katz. Here's to a new era in Hornet Basketball!

I also invite those who were behind Coach Marcopulos to still come out and support the Hornets and come here to this board. Your imput over the past couple of weeks has been invaluable and we need every supporter to bring this program to where we want it to be.

Congrats to all you Hornet fans on having a new coach in place! Good luck in the years to come... you guys deserve an improved program... and a new arena. :D I hope you get both!

Thanks duke51. Best of luck to Coach Marcopulos. A coach with his credentials will get a shot somewhere.

SACRAMENTO STATE NAMES BRIAN KATZ HEAD MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH

4/10/2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Brian Katz was named the head men’s basketball coach at Sacramento State, it was announced today by Director of Athletics Terry Wanless. Katz becomes the 13th men’s basketball coach in school history.

A graduate of Sacramento State and a native of Sacramento, Katz’s extensive basketball resumé includes a 26-year career as a head basketball coach at the NCAA Div. I, junior college and high school levels. Prior to joining the Hornets, he spent the past 15 seasons as head coach at San Joaquin Delta College (1993-2008) in Stockton, where he posted a 348-138 record (.716 winning percentage) and led the team to 14 playoff appearances, six conference championships, three Elite Eight appearances, and one Final Four appearance.

A six-time conference coach of the year at Delta College, Katz has guided the team to three conference championships over the last four years and a 108-26 overall record during that span.

“We selected Brian because he fits the four strengths we were looking for in a new coach,” Wanless said. “He is a strong recruiter, a very good teacher of the game, he develops his players on and off the court, and he will connect the basketball program with the community. He has great ties to Sacramento, and that is very important to our program.

“We had three very impressive candidates, and conducted an extensive search with over 100 applicants. The screening committee did a great job providing us with three exceptional candidates.”

Katz’s Delta teams have won at least 22 games 11 times in the last 12 seasons, including a 27-6 overall record and a 12-2 mark in the Big 8 Conference last year. In addition, at the beginning of the 2007-08 season, of the 108 players that came through the Delta program, 101 of them had advanced to four-year institutions – 62 on scholarships.

Prior to his tenure at Delta College, Katz spent four years (1989-93) at Lassen College in Susanville, Calif., where he led the team to an 87-47 record, four playoff appearances and a league championship. One of those playoff appearances came in 1992 when he led the team to the Elite Eight despite the school having just 800 students. He was also an assistant under Carroll Williams at Santa Clara where the team reached the NIT both seasons during his two-year stay (1987-89).

Previous to his stint with Santa Clara, Katz was the head coach at Antelope’s Center High School (1983-87) where he led the team to a four-year combined record of 53-34, including three Sac-Joaquin Section playoff appearances and one league championship. He began his head coaching career as the varsity coach at Orangevale’s Casa Roble High School in 1982-83.

Katz earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Sacramento State in 1980, and his master’s degree in counseling psychology from Santa Clara in 1989.

I am very excited with this choice and can't wait to go and watch some big sky action. I hope we can recruit some size, get more wins and sell more tickets. I really enjoy going to the games and hope others get the same experience.
