This was a hard game to watch. We probably played as poorly as at any time these last 4 years in all phases of the game. First the Good News:
- We got payed to play this game
- We came out of this game with very few injuries
- We were one minute away from going into half time against an FBS team down just one score
Now the Bad News:
- We were one minute away from going into half time down just one score. Seriously, what were we thinking. On the road, against an FBS team, we were set to get the ball first at the start of the 3rd quarter and rather than call some run plays to go into half time with some momentum we call 3 pass plays and give the ball back to them to score right before half!!! Serious momentum swing.
- I don't know what was said or not said at half time but it didn't work. We came out for the 3rd quarter as flat as I have ever seen this team.
- Our defense in all phases (even tackling) needs a lot of work.
- We didn't seem to be able to cover a guy in motion out of the back field all day long.
- We are in trouble with our secondary. We showed some cracks last week against a lower division opponent. Saturday was ugly.
- I'm not sure what our yards per punt were but I can't believe it was much more than a 35 yard average
- The offensive line took a step back. I expected more as we started the two FBS transfers from Utah State and Boise State. At least last week we had some nice runs to the right side. This week we couldn't do anything up the middle or off tackle.
- On both sides of the ball we weren't aggressive. We could have had more completions and 1-2 interceptions if we had gone after the ball instead of standing there. They looked hungry and we didn't.
- Most of our offensive yards were the result of scoring on trick plays or when they had their second string in at the end of the game.
- Even when the game was out of reach we didn't play our seconds to give them any game experience.
We honestly could have competed with San Jose. We really do have some good athletes. However if we want to have the season we are capable of we better be honest enough to start making some changes...
- I don't think we have found the right personnel for our offensive line yet.
- Defense is going to have to get much more aggressive; closing on the ball and tackling.
- Please start playing with a safety back deep. Our corners need help. Can we talk Seisay into going both ways and helping us at corner this season?
- We have to be smarter and more strategic with our game management.
- We can't afford to come out of half times the rest of this year without any fire.
This week is going to go a long way in deciding the character of this team. If we can focus on implementing some of the lessons we should have learned from these last two games then we will be fine. Regardless of the score we can still be working towards improving. See you in Seattle...Go Viks
