It is time to get an NCAA program for hockey at Weber State.
The basketball program will be in a continued wasteland for three more years. The basketball program can easily go back to the Swenson Gym while the University partners with Olympic Games Committee to revamp or rebuild the Dee Events center to accommodate a hockey-sized ice sheet for greater demand of curling tickets for the Olympics. The revamped Dee could be about 8,000 to 10,000 seats for hockey and more for basketball and potential concerts.
Wildcats could have an NCAA team that plays Denver, Colorado College, Air Force, Arizona State, North Dakota, Omaha…possibly Alaska teams and Minnesota teams. With the NHL here, it would be a big move to lead out in the State of Utah to get the first NCAA D1 team. NCAA Hockey is very entertaining, I’d pay basketball prices and higher for hockey than forty minutes of perimeter passing and chucking up 3s.
Hockey is more successful and as of yesterday’s announced basketball attendance can outdraw basketball even in restricted seating of the Ice Sheet. Men’s basketball team is 7-7 due to fillers while hockey is like 22-1.
It’s time to make the move!
