Scheduling

The Casper Star-Tribune has an article on Wyoming's attempt to battle scheduling difficulty (both in football and basketball) -- it comes down to more money, of course. It's something schools like ISU and other programs can probably relate to...

“We want better quality and more home games," Wyoming athletics director Tom Burman said. "Really good teams aren’t getting paid to go play on the road. So if the state gave us a million bucks, Missouri isn’t going to come here and play basketball for $200,000. They don’t need money.

"But, can we buy Missouri State for $130,000 as opposed to Cal State Bakersfield for $85,000? We’d like to get more (home games) and we’d like to get a little better teams."

“There was a time back in the day, especially in the sport of basketball, when coaches would do other coaches a favor," Burman explained. "Shyatt could call his buddies, and Florida would do a home-and-home with Wyoming. There’s no way they’ll do that now. Part of it is the travel. But if you look at Florida, they’ll play almost every home game, and then when they don’t do a home game they’ll play at Madison Square Garden or they’ll play in Miami, where they’re recruiting.

"They are not going to come to Laramie, where they’re not recruiting. And some of our fans get frustrated. ‘How come we can’t do that kind of stuff anymore?’ The game has changed."

Brad has discussed this in detail a lot in the past. He's the guy to talk to for info on how this impacts ISU and the Big Sky.

To a certain extent though from what I understand Wyoming is also part of the problem. ISU hasn't played them in a while because they won't pay anything to get them to come from Pocatello.

Next year's women's schedule will be much more friendly to the team regarding home games than the past few years. Can't speak about the men's schedule. I think for example the women will play five home non-conference games on top of their compliment of conference home games (nine).

Looks like the conference is taking on the non-conference scheduling issue. I hope they can come up with some kind of approach -- perhaps scheduling agreements with conferences like the Big West and the West Coast Conference?
