SDHornet's BSC Outlook & Predictions

I put together a Big Sky Outlook and Predictions for 2011/12. This isn’t too different from the Phil Steele preview magazine and I probably wouldn’t have posted this if I hadn’t already been about 93.75% finished with it by the time I got the PS FCS Preview Magazine in the mail last week.

I posted some team stats and rankings from last season as well as the key players leaving, returning, and some incoming recruits. For the larger classes, I didn’t list all the recruits and went with who looked noteworthy based on size and if applicable, their Rivals rating. I had trouble with the OL and if I do this outlook again, I will probably be more diligent about tracking which players started and at what spot to get a better feel for who returns and at what position. I also included week by week predictions for each school.

Feel free to point out any incorrect info or any comments as they are much appreciated. All info was pulled off of the NCAA stats website, the Big Sky Conference website, school athletic websites, and other insights I could pull from various web sources. Outlook is listed in alphabetical order, enjoy.

Conference Standings Prediction:
  • • Eastern Washington: 9-2 Overall, 8-0 BSC
    • Montana State: 8-3 Overall, 6-2 BSC
    • Sacramento State: 8-3 Overall, 6-2 BSC
    • Montana: 7-4 Overall, 5-3 BSC
    • Weber State: 6-5 Overall, 5-3 BSC
    • Portland State: 5-6 Overall, 3-5 BSC
    • Northern Arizona: 4-7 Overall, 2-6 BSC
    • Idaho State: 2-9 Overall, 1-7 BSC
    • Northern Colorado: 2-9 Overall, 0-8 BSC
I had a hard time making a prediction on who would beat who in the bottom half of the conference as even the teams that have struggled in recent years look to have potential.

Eastern Washington Eagles
EWU weathered injuries and went on an amazing run to win a share of the Big Sky Championship and then went on to win their first FCS National Championship last season. They return all of their key players except Taiwan Jones and should be the favorites to win the Big Sky in 2011.

2011/12 Outlook
EWU is completely stacked on offense. With one void on the OL to fill, there is no reason EWU shouldn’t put up ridiculous offensive numbers even with the early departure of Jones. The defense lost some key players and they will need some of the returning players to step up and fill the holes. EWU lost both starting CB’s so that may be something opponents try to exploit this season. Even with 4 starters lost on defense, there EWU should outscoring their opponents this season. This EWU team is loaded with weapons and is a favorite to win the Big Sky this season followed by a deep run in the playoffs.

2011/12 Season Prediction: 9-2 Overall, 8-0 BSC

Idaho State Bengals
ISU is coming into the season off of an abysmal winless season in D-1 match-ups. It ultimately and finally cost Coach Zamberlin his job. With a familiar face hired at the head coaching position (Coach Mike Kramer) and new turf installed in Holt Arena, the Bengals are looking to rebuild a once proud program.

2011/12 Outlook
There is a lot to get done in Pocatello, and having an experience head coach is crucial to getting goals accomplished. The Bengals are probably a few years out from making some noise in the BSC, but there is nowhere to go but up for this Bengal program. ISU does have some talents that can generate some excitement however the complete team is still lacking as the rebuilding process has just begun.

Montana Grizzlies
Montana had a lot of struggles in their first year under Coach Pflugrad even though they had a lot of returning starters. UM had trouble hanging onto the ball and had a very inconsistent season on the offensive side of the ball. This resulted in the Griz missing the playoffs for the first time in over a decade and now Coach Pflu will be tasked with stocking the program with players that fit into his scheme.

2011/12 Outlook
UM is looking to improve in Coach Pflugrad’s second season. They lack an experienced QB but seem to have all the pieces needed on the offensive side to improve over last season. Defensively UM should have a solid front 7 but will have some holes to fill in the secondary. Ultimately UM has to take better care of the ball. The experienced leadership on last season’s roster was able to overcome many mistakes and avoid some close calls, that won’t be the case this season as UM can ill afford to dig themselves out of holes late in the game week in and week out.

Montana State Bobcats
MSU is coming into the season fresh off of an amazing run that included a share of the BSC title, but concluded with a disappointing showing at home in a playoff loss to North Dakota State. Ambitions are high for the coming season in Bozeman as the Bobcats will be returning a lot of their key players who got them a taste of post season play a season ago.

2011/12 Outlook
MSU is looking to get back to the playoffs but they will need to find a running game to get there as their leading rusher Orenzo Davis is academically ineligible this season. MSU has the talent and experience to overcome this and this team should be looking to make a run deep into the playoffs if they can fill the voids.

Northern Arizona Lumberjacks
NAU is coming off of a disappointing season and yet another near .500 finish. The Lumberjacks were close to pulling off some big upsets but ultimately fell short. NAU will be looking to produce more than just a middle of the road season but it won’t be easy with the loss of a lot of senior leadership to graduation. NAU was able to depend on a stout defense last season, but much it will need to be replaced.

2011/12 Outlook
NAU will have a lot of voids to fill on both sides of the ball and there will be a lot of unknowns heading into the season. Offensively NAU will have quite a few weapons to use, but they will need to fill some voids on the OL as well as find a leader to fill the QB spot. Defensively they will have spots to fill at every level of the defense. Coach Souers and NAU will have their hands full in finding a way to be successful this season without a stout defense to rely on to keep them in games.

Northern Colorado Bears
UNC has endured nothing but struggles since it has move to D-1 and is a team that has never been able to put everything together to make it work. Those shortcomings finally led to the firing of Coach Downing. Former UNC football player and former Alcorn State Head Coach Earnest Collins was brought in to right the UNC ship. He will have his hands full with the tough task of building a successful D-1 program in Greeley, but there is reason for Bear fans to be excited. The Bears have a lot of returning players so there is something for Collins to work with.

2011/12 Outlook
The UNC players will have to deal with the transition of a new coaching staff and this may take some time. With a new no huddle spread offense the Bears could jump up and surprise a few teams but rumors are that WR Jace Davis will be ineligible for this season. QB Orms has shown flashes of brilliance but has had health issues and the UNC defense lost a lot of their leaders. UNC does have some talent returning; unfortunately they have a lot of missing pieces and at this point may be considered in the beginning of the rebuilding process.

Portland State Vikings
The Vikings are entering the season looking to continue the program’s improvement in Coach Burton’s second season at PSU. PSU was a lot more competitive than their record shows and they will be looking to win the close games they were involved with last year. They will have their work cut out for them but have a favorable schedule to start the season.

PSU will be looking to get some more wins under their belt as well as make strides to show continued improvement under Head Coach Burton. If the Vikings can balance out their offensive attack and if the defense can come around, there is no telling what this team is capable of.

Sacramento State Hornets
The Hornets are coming off of a season that had featured a handful of close losses that made the difference in the season. The Hornets overcame multiple injuries on the offensive side of the ball as well as shored up their defense under a new defensive scheme that allowed Sac State to stay in many of the close games. The Hornets will be looking to compete for a Big Sky Championship this season but they will have to overcome a schedule that includes 5 of the first 6 on the road.

2011/12 Outlook
The Hornets will be entering this season having made some changes in the defensive coaching staff but will be looking to improve on last season’s success. The Hornets return a lot of key players on both sides of the ball and should be in the hunt for a playoff berth. If the Hornets can maintain an effective and balanced offense and if the defense can fill a few voids and play just as well as it did last season, Sac State should be able to reach the playoffs and contend for a BSC title.

Weber State Wildcats
Weber State had a disappointing 2010 season. With a lot of offensive weapons returning, they expected to compete for a BSC championship and make the playoffs but were unable to win games when it mattered. WSU will now be tasked with having to rebuild its offense to stay competitive in the BSC.

2011/12 Outlook
The Wildcats will have a lot of holes to fill on the offensive side of the ball but they will have the best OL in the BSC to anchor the offense. Defensively WSU should be stout up front and I expect that unit to keep this team in a lot of games. The defense struggled a lot last season but with the experience gained they should be much improved. WSU opens the season with 2 FBS games and that could get this team off on the wrong foot to start the season.

This is great work, SD, as per usual. It would be great if you'd post it over at CS as it's on par if not better than the talking heads with their one-page-for-all-of-FCS books (if that).

Of course, you'll be risking the wrath of MSU fans, who are still smarting over that loss to the snobs at NDSU.

Great work. From what I saw of last years teams, is that there will be no games where a team can just show up and expect to win.

For years the Griz who have dominated the conference most of the time had better talent, or more importantly had the right mental attitude that it took win game in game out. They allowed their opponent to beat themselves with mental mistakes.

From a talent standpoint, I think most of the teams are pretty close unless a team has a player like T. Jones sitting on their roster. The one exception is the offensive line for Idaho State which needs to develop some depth in case of injuries. They were really shifting a lot of people around last year.

The teams that can bring the same high effort every week and believe that they can overcome all obstacles are the ones that will compete for the Big Sky Conference Crown. This is the challenge for the Sac State team. Glad to see that Schrader graduated, he hit like a Mack truck.

As far as our loss to NDSU, definitely hurt and has provided a lot of motivation over the summer where we had almost all our scholarship players in Bozeman lifting and working out all summer...60-65 players. This will be the first time in almost 5-6 years where we know who our starting QB is going to be.

SD, tell me you've posted this to every other FCS site with a link to SacBuzz... lol

GREAT read, probably the best FCS preview I've seen ANYWHERE.

Agreed! When does your magazine come out SD? ;)

Great job.....I posted on our board, but the only thing I'd add would be some of our other recruits. EWU actually had three 3-star recruits and six 2-stars.

Portland State does not play Western Oregon. They have their bye that week, and play Willamette University on October 22nd. Willamette is a D-3 school so this should be a win for PSU.

Fixed.

really, really great work. very thorough look at all the teams in the league. can't wait until we join the 'big time' next year and get included in SDHornet's review!

seriously, this is by far the best review i have read of a FCS conference. i think we all appreciate all the time and effort you obviously put into this.

Thanks DM. Although as of now I am not sure I’ll do this again. The Phil Steele FCS review magazine does a great job of breaking everything down and listing out the departing and returning players along with their stats. There isn't a need for me to duplicate that effort.

YES well done Hornets!!!!

Conference title could be a reality!1 With Last years year end run and this win over O State I see the Hornets taking hold of the BSC this season!!!

GO HORNETS!
