Seattle or Utah Valley?

Right now the Big Sky sits at 9 members in hoops and football.

in 2012 the Big Sky will have 13 football members and 11 basketball teams.

Should the Big Sky add a basketball only member? Teams that come to mind are Denver, Seattle, and Utah Valley.

Denver I believe recieved an invite to the WAC, not sure if they accepted or not, Seattle wants in the WCC, but they dont want Seattle......yet, the WAC is considering inviting Seattle as a basketball member, Utah Valley competes in the Great West for hoops, and has expressed interest in joining the Big Sky before.

Adding a basketball only team will give the Sky 12 hoops teams and would eliminate the lone wolf scenario.

I think UVU would be the best choice as that would add another rival for SUU and Weber, they are a pretty decent team, and if Im not mistaken NO Big Sky Team has won in the 8,500 seat UCCU Center, that includes Weber State. Not to mention UVU has stated that they are interested in creating a football team, so if that ever happens the Sky could just add them as a football member to make it an even 14 football team conference, its a win win

What does everyone think, who would be the best fit?

For me the best solution would be for one of the current or future members to leave, giving the conference 10 and 12. I really don't like having more than 12 football schools. But if that doesn't happen, and to answer your question, I think UVU would be a much better fit. They fit the conference model (larger public institution) and geography much better than Seattle.

I definitely dont want UVU. Weber doesn't want instate recruits to see UVU on the same level as Weber. SUU is fine, they are an old established institution, that paid their dues to receive university status and didn't do it through old-boy politics. Also, SUU is 4 hours south. UVU is nothing but a community college on par with SLCC. Seattle would be a great addition. Montana would accept them, because they are a peer institution and are a highly respected institution of higher learning. The Big Sky would like them because they can extend the media market to the Seattle area. Really, the only strike against them is travel.

However, I like S.Weber's idea...I think UND needs to go.

Denver would have been a good addition...travel partner with UNC, but unfortunately, they did accept an invite from the WAC.

From what I can see...Football and Basketball the Big Sky added better programs than the WAC. The WAC hasn't done anything for Basketball or football with their additions. Yes, Texas State has done fairly well in the FCS, but isn't anything to write home about, and how will they be able to get FBS talent in a state flooded with FBS programs, the lower level players they get will be split with Texas San Antonio. I don't think either is a good addition. Both have very poor basketball programs, even worse than SUU and UND, and neither are a great football addition. While the Sky added three proven football teams, thats kinda a stretch for SUU, but they are improving. This season, they look really good. If they held onto the ball they would have beaten Eastern last week. UND has had good seasons in the past, and will in the future by being in the Sky. I think they will get the best recruits that the Dakotas have to offer since they are in the best conference out of the Dakota Schools.

Denver...hmmm...decent basketball addition, but nothing spectacular. If the Sky got Seattle it would be about the same thing.

Final conclusion...The WAC is CRAP.

Seattle U is a private catholic university with a small population. I don't think they would fit. They would fit a lot better in the West Coast Conference. UVU' student population is soaring and will need to be recognized sooner or later. I think as a school they have surpassed being classified with SLCC.

I am going with UVU

Oh well its all a moot point, I just got an email from the Big Sky telling me that they have no plans for further expansion.

The WCC will come around sooner than later and take Seattle. They have nine now with BYU, and they need one more for scheduling. Seattle used to be in the WCC, and that media market is too tempting to pass by. I don't have the appetite for UVU and It feels like cutting UND loose might be the answer. I'm sure they would rather be in the Missouri Valley anyway.
