Shot Clock Student Section Chant

Ok...yall, its time to end this shot clock chant ASAP!!

This is very stupid and I've never understood the point. It has never worked, though not sure what there is that could even work.

By counting down, the opposing team will never have the clock expire. One would assume that common sense tells you making them aware they will get a shot off.

Instead by doing nothing there is the chance that they might not notice and then we can have our first turnover of the year from the shot clock.

A better idea would be chanting something else to get in their heads...just no counting down. If we are to remain the best student section in the conf this needs to end.

Its up to you - Bengalhate, Talhad, Flyingsparrow, Bigpapa, Tyrstraight, Cheesus,...

I disagree, and stop complaining, at least the students are doing something, what would you rather have them do? I think its a good chant to do and that it is very effective. It causes the opposing team to speed up their offense, take bad shoots, or make poor decisions. Also, it keeps the student section involved by switching up the chants.

By the way... you were telling me you had some new cheers. When and where are we going to find out about them?

I personally agree with tal, it usually just makes them speed up their shots which usually means a bad shot. Them shooting quickly probably happens more than the shot clock running out. But I do hate when people start it way too early, at like 15, that's just annoying.

Thank you Ty for your support!!! I definitely agree with both of you though.. I get bugged when I and other fans start the count down to early... Its not necessary. Also, I do think it gets old when we chant it on every single defensive possession. A couple times a game is perfect (maybe 3 or 4 done at key junctures of the game).

I do have an idea though... Instead of counting down why not randomly yell out numbers once the shot hits 10 or 9... for instance we all yell 8, and then randomly yell different numbers 11, 4, 14, 28, 2, 5, 7, and then yell 1 with plenty of time left on the shot. Could mess with them a bit. Or instead of starting a second earlier than the shot (shots at 9 and we yell 8 and count down from there) we start later (shots at 9 we start at 10), or count three and start again (shots at 12 count down to 9 start again at 12)... I don't know... Just some ideas. By the way, I'm going to watch the Water Boy on Friday so that I can be ready for PSU.

tyirstrait and talhad are sods

the chance of the opposing team not paying attention and not getting a shot of will never happen with the chant, granted they might take a bad shot quickly, still a shot at going in opposed to never attempting a shot.

i think we need to ask a coach or the players that they think. do they approve or disapprove of the chant. that should be the deciding factor.

If this was ISU they could just reply to this thread. Maybe ISU's SID will reply! LOOOOL!!!

sorry catcat i agree with captain sod (talhad) on this one. we should do it once in a while just to try to speed up the other team. i think it works honestly. if you want you can come down to the student section and lead us in chants for once.

I'm captian Sod... LOOL.. (there goes your free brauts). Yeah, CatCat you really haven't been in the section that much this year, and I'm still waiting for better cheers. TURDFERGUSON is such a better leader of cheers than you are!

DI players, who run timed sets day after day in practice and are constantly taught clock management are going to just happen to forget about the shot clock...HUH? An opposing teams point guard is well aware of how much time is on the clock... Not only that but their bench and coaching staff are yelling the time at them. The chant is to screw up the other players on the floor. Its gets them out of their rythmn and makes them speed up their roles in the offensive sets, while the guard is still going the normal speed. Also, it causes the opposing team to take a haphazard shot, which more often than not is missed. It also gets our players to become that much more aggressive on defense since they know that the clock is about to expire. HOwever, everyone is taught to play till the whistle or horn sounds.

Cap'n Sod,

You gotta be loud so that it wouldn't matter if the opposing bench was trying to warn the team...

Es Oh Dee

Oh I love the idea of yelling out random numbers, that might kind of screw with them. What we need is like someone with cue cards hold up a number for our section to shout and just put them in random order so it will be loud too, not just a mass of people yelling a bunch of different numbers.

That would be funny as heck.

I'm glad that CatCat brought this up....this conversation is really going to help us improve our chants, our section, and eventually our entire crowd. Cue Cards, a white board, better info on opposing players and coaches, all are needed as instruments that can improve the section. What are some other chants that are used to much? Does anyone else have any cheer/chant ideas? What can we call opposing players? I like Webster for Benny Valentine tommorrow...

were you all cheerleaders in high school or something? lol.
i'm just messing with you all. keep up the good cheer work ladies

The OBJECT is to say 8 when there is say 11 secs left....so really they get in hurry up and miss a bad shot. that way they get frustrated with not only the good D. But also they get upset at their teammates for not giving the 5 sec, screen most teams run. which was going to happen bu had not developed yet....

5 sec screen is for all you who dont know. with apx. 5 secs left in the shot clock... you get a high end or side screen to get a decent shot off. some teams also run a 5 sec issolation. which they try to screen away and clear the box for a drive/ foul attempt.

i was wondering.... what does the weber area do with a foul out? just wondering i know what i think is fun but i have seen quite a few different ones. my favorite is the walk and sit chant

Yes, I am ashamed of the student section. I also would like to know...

As much as I hate to agree with a grizzly... I have to. The purpose of the count down is to get the screen to happen earlier than is necessary, thus breaking the flow of the offensive set. Also, the guard isn't looking for the screen yet, cause, in most cases, he knows the time, and is still running the original play, when suddenly a high screen happens. Throws it all off and makes the players throw up a desperation shoot or causes them to commit a TO.

Indeed tal. i hope the bigsky championship comes down to weber and montana in basketball too. that would be pretty fun for both sides. No word on the foul out chant?? lol sorry i keep harping on it. But i would like to add the count down chant does not work if you do it wrong. OR if its not loud and you do like 2 numbers. Then everyone on the opp. team just became aware of the chot clock AND are not worried . :D
