Signing Day 2011

Jake Gerringer impresses me and he has been with the program since January... I wouldn't be surprised if he jumps up to #2 in the depth chart by game 1. Cox and Pickett seem to be good players. The diamond in the rough looks like it may be Dan Stornaiuolo (OL).

Other than that... meh...

Looks like some of the guys were on board as of 2010 signing day and were probably gray shirts last year.

Keep in mind we are pretty stacked heading into the 2011-12 season so this class was all about depth. Right now the key recruits are a 2-star “pro style QB” was landed which is HUGE, plus added size and youth at the WR position as well as the TE position. I’m a little surprised at the amount of RB’s that were recruited. Maybe some will be transitioned into other positions or some are used specifically in the return game and special teams. We have a lot of underclassmen at OL but we were still able to land another OL with size.

Defensively given the coaching changes at LB and DL, I didn’t expect much noise on the recruiting side of things. Seeing a couple LB’s and a DL recruit was a surprise to me. 2-star BD Pickett has to be the top defensive recruit in this class. Keep in mind this is just the initial wave of recruits. If there are still scholarships available, the coaches can still add FBS drop downs and any JC players they think are needed to fill spots. We will be fine heading into 2011.

Go Hornets!

Hopefully Lars Hansen can put on about 30-40 lbs and play tackle. Fleming and Gerringer are tall enough to play behind a massive line.

I was surprised at all the RBs too, but after the recent flameouts...Tyrone Gross, Ryan Mole, The Marshall Guy (Gershwan sp?), Travon Jones, Terrance Dailey, Shaw, and the list goes on... and injuries (Hilliard, Croxdale, and McCowan)... guess it can't hurt!

The highlight videos of Dallon Muse are pretty impressive. He looks fast and athletics. According to Rivals.com he had offers from several FBS schools. Looks like a good win!

Recent? Gross played when I was a sophomore. Mole was also another Moosh era guy, but Sperbeck gets all the credit for those UDub fiascos.

We will have Douglas coming off of a redshirt to add depth. Hilliard, Crox, McCowan, Douglas, blocking back Tezanos-Pinto…I covered this in the Offense recap. ;)

A few guys stood out to me.

Geringer looks like he is a steal. He looks posed and has a acurate arm.
Pickett looks like a good db should and he likes to hit.
Stornaiulo lhas good mobility for a large guy 6'5 300 wow.
Taylor looks agressive and active on the D-LINE
Payne brothers look like good db prospects.

Overall I like the class on film. But again only 3 locals. That's just frustrating to me. I don't think it's Sperbecks fault though.

Jonnie O was the local coordinator...I'm guessing his departure played a role in that.

From the Daily Bulletin on players expected to sign Wednesday :

Jacoby Carter, Diamond Ranch, CB - Sacramento State

Did we lose Jacoby Carter? According to the link above, he had given a verbal but I don't see him listed among the recruits confirmed by HornetSports.com

He's now listed as signed - the list is updated as letter's come in.

I also noticed this monster was added…unless I missed him earlier when I glanced over the signee list:

Nathan Castro
DL • 6-0 • 325
San Diego, Calif. • Mira Mesa High School

• As a senior, Castro was the Eastern League Defensive Player of the Year and a first team all-San Diego Section selection.
• Recorded 110 tackles, including 83 solo stops as a senior.
• Cracked double-digits in three games, including 13 against Dorsey.
• Had five sacks for a combined loss of 39 yards.

Booyah, talk about a run stopper!

BTW, just checked the AFA website. They are NOT announcing new players until sometime this summer due to the appointment process. If Graves (or any other AFA recruit) was seen to have signed what appeared to be a National Letter of Intent, it was really a Certificate of Intent, which is a non-binding document that allows players to take part in Signing Day activities for publicity purposes. It signals their commitment to follow through on the appointment process. The AFA issued a press release stating that as a non-schollie institution, they don't use NLIs anyway.

So we'll find out sometime this summer if Graves made it in or not. He probably will, but plebe summer (or whatever the Air Force calls it) does weed some people out. We could see him in a Hornet uniform yet. We got an outstanding gymnast as a transfer from AFA, and it could happen in football, too.

Not going to happen. Congrats to Cadet Graves and thank you for your impending service to our country!!

It's actually not as big a slam dunk as you think SHA, in regards to Graves and AF. Have heard via the Folsom community that his grades are borderline for the Academy and a lot could happen between now and the fall.

I just have a gut feeling that this is not the end of this story.

Jameel Pugh went to UMASS on a hoops scholarship when UMASS was rolling and the Grant High School local star came back home to play for the Hornets... May see the same from Graves, you neve know...
