And looking at the list Montana looks like they stayed home this year.

.

The one thing that jumps out at me from that list is that most of the schools recruited and landed kids from outside their own state. The only ones that didn't sign anyone from OOS were Sac St, UCD, and Cal Poly. The other schools signed athletes from neighboring states and even a few from non-Big Sky states such as Hawaii, Texas, Nebraska, and Florida.

My question is this, if the Hornets face the obstacle of losing local recruits simply because they want to go to school out of the area, then how come they aren't landing some of those kids in return (from Oregon, Washington, Montana, Nevada, etc) ??

While I realize they have recruited and landed some athletes outside of Ca. in the past, it seems as if EWU, PSU, Montana, MSU, etc. land a lot more recruits from Ca. than the Ca. schools, specifically Sac State, land from those neighboring states.

My perception is that there is plenty of talent in state to where Sac State shouldn’t need to go beyond the state border. Plus I think if an out of state recruit is brought in, out of state tuition might count against the football budget.

I searched but did not find if Kori Babineaux of Folsom signed anywhere. His brother plays at Las Vegas, but any word out there on if/where?

Sounds like he might be weighing his options as he had a lot of offers. From the Sperbeck video someone posted, it sounds like the Sac State scholarships were maxed out. Someone also mentioned he plays hoops so maybe there is a chance for a split football/b-ball scholarship or something. :?:

I agree that there is a lot of talent in the state. However, if you are truly recruiting the best players available, you can't be limited to just the state of California. It's not like Cali has cornered the market on talented players. Furthermore, the idea that Sac State shouldn't need to look beyond the state border is unacceptable to me. While I realize that Sac State is levels and levels below the likes of Cal, Stanford, USC, UCLA, etc .. you don't see those schools limiting themselves to athletes from California simply because there is a lot of talent here. While on a smaller scale, the same logic should apply to Sac State. While they can't realistically recruit from all over the country like the big boys do, they need to recruit as many of the Western States as possible.

All that said, perhaps the OOS tuition you brought up may indeed be a factor. I had not considered that. If true, it would seemingly apply to our Big Sky rivals when they recruit kids from OOS, yet they still manage to do so.

I agree recruiting shouldn’t be bounded by state border, but I imagine it takes additional funds to take a serious look at recruits beyond CA (increased recruiter travel budget and additional time lost to travel). I just think a program on our level is bounded by money more than state boundaries which is probably the main reason out of state recruits are not common. The Pac-12 schools will always have the budget to track down talent across the western states.

Likewise, Schools can economically come to California and recruit dozens of talented kids from a large population in a relatively small geographic area. I get the impression everybody knows about the talent honey pot in California. It just takes lots of resources to cover the entire west.
