So far five players have signed this morning.

I'm pretty excited about Baron Bruce 6-4 295lbs OL from Alta High. It seems like Baron will be taking part in Spring Ball with the Cats this year. He is already enrolled at Weber after graduating early.

Big signing class so far, up around 25 players, lot's of local players, so I am sure there are several mission kids in the group.

FYI… they cannot sign kids who are leaving for a mission before starting school. They have to wait until the mission is finished before they can sign since the LOI is only good for one year.

Sure they can, baller. Happens all the time. (See link below).

That makes sense. Mission kids, in the past, at least went to 1 semester of school before leaving on missions. Now, most leave right away without attending school. I'm sure though there is something occurring, verbal of some sort, prior to leaving that "ensures" a kids is intending to return to a specific university once his mission is done. But an LOI doesn't really mean anything, even if they sign. If a kid does sign, then that allows a coach to talk about the student-athlete. That might be enough of a reason to sign. I still wouldn't doubt it if we see a number of these kids leave on missions. If we remember right a handful of kids signed last year who were automatic mission kids. Most of our local recruits in 2013 were mission kids. There were a couple in 2012 too, but the age change hadn't happen yet, so who knows when and if they are returning to Weber.

They still sign a LOI. DT Cole McGinnis signed even though he won't enroll before his mission. I'm really excited about this kid. Big get by the coaching staff. Coach Swan was the main reason he signed with Weber. Anytime you can steal one from Montana and E Wash, you've done good.

One of the best local high school football players in recent memory got a moment worthy of the occasion.

McGinnis was a four-time all-state player and a three-time Times-News all-area selection during his glittering prep career. The Times-News did not have an all-area team the year he wasn’t selected.

He chose Weber State over Montana, Northern Colorado, Eastern Washington and Idaho State, among other suitors. He said Utah State was interested but told him a scholarship offer wouldn’t be made before he returned from his mission.

McGinnis forged a bond with Weber State assistant coach Colton Swan, a Jerome native. Swan’s father, John Swan, coached and taught in Gooding for three decades and was McGinnis’ middle school football coach.

The thing to remember, of course, is that they are re-recruitable once they return from their mission. They can change schools without any penalty.

And they may not be "good enough" for our developed program when they return.

This is an excellent recruiting class. When you consider that they had such a short time to do it, it's even more amazing. Coach hill and his staff are saying and doing all of the right things. There is a sense of confidence surrounding what they are doing. I truly believe we are seeing a change in the football culture at WSU. :thumb: :thumb:

:agree:

I was blown away by our signing class. How many Utah boys signed? Hill wasnt kidding when he said he was going after instate talent. Im excited for football again!
Makes you wonder why we started pulling players from Oklahoma and Florida instead of our own backyard?

There is a bias against Utah Athletes. Hill is from Utah, as well as all of his staff. They know there is a lot of talent in the state (look at SUU, they have only gotten better and better and they are doing it with Utah athletes) and know that the FBS schools will overlook talented kids for kids out of state. These athletes might be a bit better now, but are they going to develop or have the same development possibility as the local talent? Just because they come from bigger state populations or metropolitan areas they will? Weber got a couple of in state and regional kids who got overlooked because of where and who they play, but have a lot of upside and I predict will make just as big as an impact and become great players.

For instance, Randy Rahe. Love coach, but the Hayden Hunter signing makes me wonder. There are Utah kids who are just as good, but don't supposedly play the same "level" of competition or come from as large as an area population wise. The belief that Utah athletes aren't as skilled or good as their counterparts, and hence, that there aren't very many DI caliber athletes in Utah according to a lot of DI coaches. "Only a handful, so we need to be out of state in areas where there is a concentration of talent; Florida, Texas, California, etc etc...Yes, I believe we need to supplement our classes with out of state kids, but the whole, not a lot of DI talent, I call BS. Jesse Wade from Davis high (basketball) just signed with Gonzaga and Weber wasn't even recruiting the kid. He is in our backyard for hell's sake. How many other kids are we missing out on, because we refuse to recruit out backyard?

As for this class?! Awesome. I give it an A.

Baron Bruce is my top recruit. Great lineman. I think all of the lineman in this class will make an impact on the program. Granted, 7 are automatic mission kids, the ones who will be around next year will push our returning lineman; especially on the offensive line. Baron Bruce already looked in better shape, stronger, and ready to play unlike some of our lineman.

There is a big difference between football and basketball in this state. The state has really become a football state and has really good and plentiful talent. But in basketball there really isn't a great deal of D1 type talent (I'd say in a typical year 5-6 players). And unfortunately the players with that type of talent won't give Weber the time of day. I know for a fact that Wade wouldn't even consider Weber. Same with Chapman from Roy. I personally would love to see more Utah kids but until Weber begins to beat the other instate schools consistently and begins to make noise in the NCAA tournament the best Utah kids just aren't going to even consider Weber. So I really have no problem with Rahe going out of state for most or all of his recruits. He's got to recruit where he can get the best players available.

I heard Coach Hill say that from this class 10-12 could serve missions. And I agree about Baron Bruce. He could end up being a four year starter and a kid the state's "big three" could be kicking themselves for passing over.

Also excited to see the two RB transfers play. Both were 3 star recruits coming out of high school. Although I have to wonder what Cassita's story is. He graduated from HS in 2007.

I'm beginning to think I'm borderline obsessed with recruiting. But you are right on SWeber...Rahe can only do what he can do and the instate kids, who can play at the level Weber is at, are few and far between. Brekkot Chapman may be the best kid out of Weber County in some time, and he wouldn't even give the Cats a look. Funny, that in two years, when he is looking to transfer, Weber won't really give him a look either. Also, even though, I prefer basketball, Utah is becoming a football state. There are a number of football athletes, who could, if they focused exclusively on basketball, be DI caliber recruits. But, they have chosen football over basketball. Whereas, in past decades the athlete would have chosen basketball over football. I'm sure it will swing back a bit in the future, but right now, it is football. Anyway, there aren't enough to go around now between the 6 DI programs. Rahe personally recruits the area kids, and in a lot of cases, Weber is in the top 3, or even top 2, but not the top choice. There are three or four kids playing at the Y who had Weber on their list (Mika, Haws, Austin...).

I do like the class. I like the mix between tall, lanky, and speedy skill players.

Exactly! 'NOgdenCat' should check with the Utah kids or their coaches to get a clear reason why...as in, THEY DON'T CONSIDER Weber State! It's a long time issue, I can remember when Neil McCarthy got criticized about the same thing & gave the same response. 'SWeberCat02' is right on with saying until Weber St. starts beating instate teams more often (& beats BYU more than once every 10 yrs!) & makes some noise in the NCAA, the cream of the crop Utah high school basketball players are only thinking BYU, Utah, Utah St. or out of state colleges. Simple fact.

By the way, GREAT JOB Coach Hill & Staff for the new Wildcat recruiting class!!!! Things are definitely giving Wildcat football fans much to look forward to! A new era with Impressive recruits! :thumb:
