Signings

This class is probably the best in Katz's tenure and possibly the best in Sacramento State history. No other Big Sky team signed as many freshmen. The continuity the Hornets have coming back has allowed Katz to bring in freshmen to mentor under McKinney, Garrity, Demps, et al. The future looks bright for Sac St....
I see this as the Katz plan finally coming together.

I agree. This class has great range. Players for front court, back court, size, perimeter shooting, ball handling, etc. I hope these players can develop and gel to become a solid nucleus of this program for the next 4-5 years. Good to see zero reliance on JC players, most of whom have been total busts. This is the first all HS class for Katz, no?

Great haul by Katz and the coaches!

I was just looking over the stats of the newbies and the one stat that slapped me in the face was Mason Stuteville's 3pt %. At 48% he would of led the Hornets last year and been 4th in the NCAA. With his size our opponents will have to bring a big man out to challenge and that should open up more room for McKinney and Garrity to get to the hole. The options that can eventually be utilized are staggering.

Credit definitely due here. Clearly the best Katz recruiting class, probably an all-time best. Love the SIZE and backcourt depth!

I really see us as Big Sky favorites going into next season. If these freshmen improve as quick as last years group the only problem will be getting them all minutes. We played nine deep last year and only lost one of that group. Do we go 10 or 11 deep this year?? Nice problem to have though. Time to start speculating on line-ups. My guess is not too controversial.....
PG Mihk McKinney
SG Dylan Garrity
SF Cody Demps
PF Nick Hornsby
C Eric Stuteville
That is my guess for the beginning of the season but that may change by the time conference rolls around.
What are you're guesses???

I'm just hoping that the Hornets can finally get over .500 for once in over twenty years - go 16 and 14 at least and maybe win a game in the playoffs. Only three of the Big Sky teams lose much from this year, so with our tradition of losing I'll have to see it before I believe it.

I'd love to see us battling for the title, but I'm not getting my hopes up for our hoops or football programs.

Ok, let's lay it out; EWU lost no seniors, ISU lost two of their top three players (Tomas Sanchez and Andre Hatchett), Montana lost their best by far player (Kareem Jamar) and their starting center, Montana St. lost their best player and another starter and their sixth man (Flavien Davis, Paul Egwuonwu, and Antonio Biglow), UND lost everyone who played much (top seven players), NAU lost their second leading scorer and rebounder (Max Jacobsen),UNC lost their two top scorers and their top rebounder (Derrick Barden and Tate Unruh), PSU lost two of their top four scorers (Kyle Richardson) and one (Gary Winston) via transfer, SUU had nothing to lose but still lost Jason Cheesman, and WSU who lost their top two scorers (Kyle Tresak and Davion Barry). So in my opinion there are only two other teams (EWU and NAU) who didn't lose much from last year. With who we bring back and who we bring in when compared with the other two I believe we should be the favorite. WSU and Montana can never be disregarded but they will have to prove themselves this year. By the way The Green Hornet...which three teams were you talking about??? I count seven who lost a lot more than we did and I count zero who have brought in the quality we have.

No arguments with PGP’s projected lineup at this point in time. The only real question mark is at 4. Maybe one of the newbies steps up and earns it but more than likely it will be Hornsby. The biggest issue will be depth. Hopefully some of these incoming guys can get some work in to take the load off the starters while also getting some experience. I’m guessing we see continued platooning in the frontcourt to work in the newcomers. The Hornets need to find 3-4 guys coming off the bench who can provide solid play when needed.

Well PGP you already know I’m not going to let us get ahead of ourselves. WSU and UM have nothing to prove, they have already done so year in and year out. The BSC title goes through Ogden or Missoula EVERY year and next year will be no different even with the departures. I’m not buying us as a favorite to win it all next year. We were the 7th best team in a conference of 11. Next year it will be a conference of 12. Are we a favorite to finish in the top half of the conference? Yes. Are we a favorite to win it all? Not IMO.

That said, anything is possible. I’d love to see us take the crown but there still needs to be improvement (winning on the road, not digging ourselves a hole at the beginning of BSC play). Also with the new scheduling format there is a chance (probably a great chance) we get hosed with a tough BSC slate. This team has the talent and leadership and next season needs to be a winning season with at least 1 win in the BSCT.

I agree that the championship runs thru Montana and Weber but I really feel Montana has dropped more than just a notch. No longer do they have a Cherry or a Jamar to go to in crunch time. I'm not convinced that Gregory, DeSheilds and Weisner can keep them in the top tier. Weber on the other hand lost a lot but they have picked up some players who may fill the bill for them. They will have to depend on freshmen to make up the loss in scoring. I also believe that we barely scratched the surface of how good Stuteville is going to be. He is a tireless worker and really wants to be good. I think we will see a force in the post next year who can also go outside to open up the lane. It's fun to voice opinions but it will be more fun when the rubber meets the road. I think we only play Montana and Weber once apiece this year. Not sure if those are home or road games. We do play Gonzaga in Spokane for an early season check.

I expect at least three teams to be improved, Sac St, NAU, and EWU. I think NAU will be a legitimate championship contender, and Sac St and EWU will both finish in the top half of the conference. In regards to Weber, while there may be some growing pains next year, they still have the talent to compete for the top spot. They lose three senior starters, but they also had three freshman and a sophomore start or play significant minutes this year. And they have high hopes for the incoming recruiting class. The freshman big coming in was first team all-state in Colorado's highest classification. Of their two JC signings, one was an HM All-American and the other averaged over 20 pts/game.

I've seen Jermaine Edmonds in both high school and JC and he is way too inconsistent for Weber fans to depend on. Jae Johnson-Caston has nice size (6'6" 210) but he still only averaged 13 and 6 in JC. Golden can score but he is only 154 lbs. Got to see if he can take the pounding he's going to get in the BSC. Jefferson has got good potential but he needs some strength too (6'2" 160lbs). Braxton looks to be real good someday but when will that day be??? I will still take our knowns (8 of our top 9 from last year) over your projected players but we both will have to wait to see how it plays out.

Edmonds signed with UM, not Weber. I'd agree that Johnson-Coston's stats don't look like stats you would expect from a region MVP and JC all-American, so either there is much more to his game than what you see on paper or it isn't very hard to be a JC all-American. And I think we'll start to see this season how good Braxton is or isn't. He's almost certainly going to play significant minutes as a true freshman, and could possibly start.

Winning on the rrrrrrrrrrroad is the hurdle that this progam needs to overcome. The Hornetts seem to be just fine at Hornet Gym and no reason to believe that will change next season as the shack turns 60 ys. old.
