The Weber State University Football Team, the Big Sky co-conference champions, will open the season on the road against two powerhouse teams in University of Wyoming and the University of Colorado. WSU has been picked to finish second in the Big Sky Conference in this year's preseason poll.
The Wildcats, coming off a 10-4 record season and a 7-1 record in conference play, claimed a share of the first Big Sky Championship trophy in 17 years. The team finished 4-1 in the preseason and had 10 players named to the all conference preseason poll.
"We worked hard on the defensive end and the offensive ends of the ball," said Head Coach Ron Mcbride. "Their hard work will pay off this season."
Weber State University senior running back Trevyn Smith and his three rushing titles will be key to the Wildcats' running game success this year.
Weber State returns 13 starters from last year's team that averaged 35.2 points per game. WSU quarterback Cameron Higgins takes his offensive MVP trophy into this year's season showing that he is the number one quarterback in the Big Sky. Preseason polls had 10 WSU players named to all-conference.
"Trevyn and Cameron are talented kids who feed off each other when the game is in their hands," Mcbride said. "They help to relieve pressure off the defense."
The University of Wyoming coming off an impressive fall camp, added depth to their special teams in hopes to improve on their defense in key moments in the game. The Buffalos lost eight players due to graduation and are hoping to replace those players with bigger and stronger players to fill the void in their defense. Free Safety Brenden Johnson will be one the Wildcats will be watching since he had four interceptions in the Cowboys preseason games.
The University of Wyoming has a brand new system with the acquisition of a new coach. They continue to build on their impressive year last year by filling voids on the offensive line with players that average around 300 pounds.
"It will be interesting to see how their offense will come together in Laramie," Mcbride said. "They have been nice enough to let us use game film to study their offense and defensive plays." This will be the Wildcats first meeting with the Cowboys since the acquisition of coach Ron Mcbride.
The Wildcats will have the day off tomorrow before they to Laramie to face the Cowboys.
"We are very excited to get the season underway," Mcbride said. "If we execute our game plan then everything will follow."
