Sioux vs Seminoles

Why can the Seminoles keep their name while the Sioux and ordered to drop their name?

NCAA hypocrisy. And Florida State has a lot more money. However, they don't have as much as the Redskins, who see the other side of the coin by getting shaken down. Either we bow to political correctness, or not, but trying to play both sides of the equation is just absurd.

I'm sorry, but the situation has less to do with money and more to do with the situation of the schools. Comparing these schools is just apples and oranges.

To put it simply, the NCAA made the correct move regarding UND's nickname. This didn't come out of nowhere, because of modern "political correctness". For decades, the tribes who can be called Sioux have protested the school's nickname the NCAA responded. UND was given three years to convince the tribes to support the continuation of the "Fighting Sioux" name, but were unsuccessful. Whether UND offered to remove the "Fighting" and just keep Sioux to have a less violent connotation, I don't know. However, the tribes did not approve their nickname, and thus it was removed. Simple as that.

Florida State Seminole's nickname was approved by the Seminoles. The Seminoles worked with the university to correct costume errors and create a ceremony which honored the ceremony. Florida State also agreed not to have a Seminole mascot doing tricks and stunts, as that is typically considered degrading. However, if the Seminoles decide Florida State is sullying their tribe's name, they can appeal to the NCAA to have it removed.

Redskins have absolutely nothing to do with this conversation, because they are not a part of the NCAA.

Now, can we get this BS political thread off of our football forum?

Yes, FSU "convinced" the seminoles to allow them to keep the mascot and namesake. "Convincing" a group of individuals to do something tends to be quite a bit easier when you have money. FSU has a lot of money, UND does not.

Also, there was at least one group of Sioux Indians, cannot remember which one, whose Chief did not even allow his people to vote. There were others that actually backed UND keeping the nickname. The whole thing was pretty shady all-around.

At the end of the day, I think peoplemare kidding themselves if they don't think $$$ had a great deal to do with the decision.

There is no evidence for or against the notion that money had something to do with it. That is all speculation. However, it doesn't matter. The Seminole tribe gave them the go ahead, and so they can have the mascot.

UND has been fighting the Sioux for decades while, at least on the outside, FSU has had a good relationship with the Seminoles for decades.
