On a night when the spoiler bug was biting throughout the Independent Women's Football League, the Sacramento Sirens escaped to clinch the Pacific West Division title with a 60-0 trouncing of the hapless Modesto Maniax at Paul Shimada Stadium at Natomas High School in Sacramento tonight. The Portland (OR) Shockwave's 7-6 squeaker over the California Quake (Long Beach) ensured a trainwreck for the playoffs as there is a three-way tie for the Pacific West Wild Card berth. By strict head-to-head, Portland wins, but we won't know for sure until Mr. Massey finishes crunching his bogus numbers.
This night also saw the Sirens clinch home field advantage throughout the Western Conference playoffs because the spoiler Kansas City Tribe knocked off the previously undefeated Chicago Force 30-12. The likely Midwest Division playoff scenario is likely unaffected, though, as the one-loss Dallas Diamonds moved into a tie for first with Chicago via their 44-36 win over the Houston Energy.
In other Western Conference games, the SoCal Scorpions (San Diego) defeated the Tier II Bay Area Bandits 26-22 and the resurgent Seattle Majestics finished the season on a positive note by blasting the shorthanded Tucson Monsoon 56-0.
The Divisional Playoffs are scheduled for next Saturday, with a month off for the World Championships. Sacramento is moving to Inderkum High for at least the Divisional round. I anticipate that Sac (8-0)will host Portland (6-2) unless Mr. Massey decides to give the nod to California (6-2). Dallas (7-1) will definitely square off with Chicago, but Mr. Massey will probably decide where. In the Eastern Conference, the undefeated Boston Militia (8-0) will host the New York Sharks (7-1), while Mr. Massey will have to decide between the DC Divas (5-3) and the Miami Fury (5-3) to determine who will face the Atlanta Xplosion (7-1). Boston has home field advantage on the Eastern side. The Conference Championships will be contested at home sites 10 July, and the Championship will take place 24 July in Round Rock, TX, the IWFL HQ.
