In perhaps their closest game to date north of Fresno, the Sacramento Sirens opened a 10-0 halftime lead and held on during a furious fourth quarter LA Amazon comeback to win 10-6, virtually assuring the Sirens of homefield advantage throughout the IWFL Western Conference playoffs with two games remaining.
After a tight first quarter which ended scoreless, Sac scored 10 points in the second period, the most important of which may have been kicker Jennifer Bloom's 23-yard FG, her first of the year, which put the Amazons in a two-possession game the rest of the way.
THe Sirens defense was dominant most of the night before breaking on a sweep to the offensive right sideline that broke Sac's 11+ quarter scoreless streak with a 40-some-odd yard TD scamper with 2:32 left in the game. The ensuing PAT attempt hit the crossbar, however, forcing the next LA score to be a TD. It never happened.
With less than a minute left, the Amazons had secured the ball on a Bloom punt and were driving for the winning TD when Sirens LBer Lineni Noa sealed the win with a pick on about the Sirens 25. Emergency quarterback Amy Williams ended the game with a series of kneeldowns.
The Sirens attack was hampered much of the game by the absence of starting QB Chantelle Powers, who was not cleared by doctors after leaving last week's game in Modesto with an injury. Backup Trudy Wolfe had an average game at best against one of the truly tougher teams in the Pacific West Division. Williams replaced Wolfe in the fourth quarter (taking the role of a baseball closer) after a fine game in the defensive secondary.
The Sirens improved to 6-0 with home games remaining against the Tucson Monsoon next Saturday and Modesto Maniax the following Saturday at Natomas High, near ARCO Arena. Game time is 6 PM. LA dropped to 3-3.
In other Pacific West Division action, the California Quake improved to 6-1 with a 34-14 win over the Tier II SoCal Breakers, the SoCal Scorpions zoomed to 4-2 with a 41-0 shellacking of the Tier II Tucson Monsoon, and the Portland Shockwave took down the hapless Seattle Majestics 20-14. Portland shot to 4-2, while Seattle fell to 0-6. In the Midwest Division, the Chicago Force maintained their undefeated record by defeating the Pittsburgh Passion in a close interconference matchup 7-0. Chicago is 7-0. The Dallas Diamonds (6-1) moved into second place with a 35-21 win over the Kansas City Tribe (5-2). The Houston Energy were off.
Here are the Western Conference standings. They are skewed from straight record by the weird rating system (Massey Rating + Winning Percentage) the IWFL uses.
