...why offensively do we always act like "we're too good to run the football???"

I mean, really, our passing game is suspect and involves a lot of risk. Mitchell makes bad reads, bad throws, and requires our receivers to bail him out an awful lot. Don't get me wrong, he makes some plays too, and he's competent, but every time he drops back, there's a lot more risk involved than if we just run it for our ridiculously high yardage per attempt.

Mitchell's first pick 6 was a 100% bad read on a corner that just squatted on the ball (one play after he overthrew a wide open Taiwan who was 10 yards behind every defender). He never looked to check the corner, and was easily picked in the flat... the most dangerous place to throw a ball. On his fumble lost, he never looked left to check the corner and didn't read the blitz. Hell, a guy in a wheelchair would've sacked him on that play. And WORST OF ALL, we're up 27-24 going in to score, and after moving the ball in big chunks, we decide to mix it up and promptly throw and interception to let Montana stay alive and potentially give the game away on a single stupid play call. To a large degree, this isn't on Mitchell, but on our coaches.

Contrast that to Jones and Beaumonte who are the best RB tandem ever at EWU, and Jones maybe the best back ever at EWU---- given Jesse Chatman's stats, that's a bold statement. At the very least, Jones is the best playmaker, even if he isn't as good a pure RB. I mean, a good offense needs some diversity, but when the game is tight, hang your hat on what you do best.

I really hope Mitchell improves and becomes the kind of QB we expect at EWU... and he very well could because the tools are all there. But right now, he's marginal at best and we can't trust him to make big throws; it makes sense to do what we can do effectively, and that is run the ball for big yardage. Frankly, I'd make sure jones has 30 touches every game and Beaumonte carries the ball 15 times as well. In tight games, they may even see the ball 5 more times each.

No doubt, Mitchell hasn't dialed in yet but I'm pretty sure he will. He seems to have all the tools and gets better every week (maybe his stats weren't as good this week but, then again, we WERE playing the Griz, not DII CWU).

One of the things that makes our running game so good is the passing game. Without it, you won't see the numbers TJ and Beau are putting up. We HAVE to throw to keep the D honest. I, for one, am looking forward to see how well our offense is clicking by mid-season and beyond. Could really be something awesome when the pass game gets rolling...

I'm used to the QB getting trashed after a loss; but this was one of the biggest victories in the football program according to the coach's. Mitchell WAS dialed in. He sustained the last drive which was huge. Nick for some reason was dropping the ball all night, Brandon Kaufman is a beast. You take away those dropped balls and getting the rcvrs to run the right routes and we're there. Mitchell is not going to get a lot better than what he played so get used to it. Mitchelll is one of the reasons we won that game.

No kidding, we don't win that game without Bo Levi and his leadership. Comes with the territory as a QB, tough to follow Matt Nichols but let's give one of our team captains some credit. I have no complaints about the CWU or UM games, I was there for both. These are not professional football players. They are outstanding young men who always represent EWU with class. Ask Vic Wallace, he will tell you that win or lose these guys conduct themselves properly. They can also play football. Very happy to see Bo Levi and his family embrace Eagle football, we are fortunate to have them. Now let's go beat Montana State. See you in Bozeman.

Good call Dopa, we were chewing up good yardage inside with Beaumonte, and should've never thrown that pass when we did !! BUT WE DID and still came out on the winning side !! I agree with you though, when we are dominating inside !! and we were, stay with it !! , made the game closer than it should've been !!! good call !!

I don't think you understand what I'm saying EAA... I don't blame Mitchell for our shortcomings, he will likely improve because all the tools are there. What I'm saying is that it is obvious that the guy isn't the force behind our offense right now through the air... our strength- unquestionably- is our ability to run the ball. We had 3 turnovers on Saturday, and every single one was completely the fault of BoLevi. That doesn't make him less of a person, but it does make less of our coaches to keep rolling the dice on a kid who is making mistakes instead of hanging our hat on what we do well. We should have just accepted that he was struggling and worried about getting him back on track the following week. To his credit, he made a couple of great scrambles... again, reinforcing how good we are at running the ball.

When we were up 27-24, Montana knew we would run the ball and the completely could not stop it. We walked down the field, all until we decided to throw the ball and promptly tossed an INT to let the Griz right back in the game. Why? It was a bad play call.

Coincidentally, I made a similar comment about the struggles of our safeties the last two weeks. Wow, I thought they improved tenfold in the last week. However, our linebackers struggled quite a bit. When teams go to that quick-hitter offense, our LBs are not getting to the play... and on one occassion our Zach Johnson went to the wrong dropzone and we gave up about a 20 yard 3rd down play. The next play, he missed a one-on-one tackle in the backfield that turned into another 20 yard gain. Montana busted us for a TD on that same drive.

I disagree. I think he's gonna get even better and that's my point about being excited for what we'll see when he does. I've been pleased so far... Sure, recievers need to hold on to well thrown balls and QB's usually get the blame for a poorly run route since most fans only see the ball go where there is no reciever but I think that all get's better as the guys get more comfortable in game situations...

Hey Dopa,

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that felt this way. Throughout the game, but especially with seven minutes left in the fourth Montana was on their heals. Beaumonte was pounding the ball and TJ was beating them on the outside. I was saying just run the ball. Keep the clock moving, you've got them on their heals...and then I think TJ ran the ball out of bounds, clock stopped, and we go right back into passing mode. TJ is amazing, his stats speak for themselves, but their is something about a bruising back like Beaumonte that can wear a defensive front pretty thin. Lets hope we go take it to the cats this weekend.

I'm curious here because it almost seems like some of you watched a different game than I did. First off, the first pick was just Mitchell not reading a squat corner and getting picked--- that's a QB error. Second turnover was Mitchell not seeing a corner blitz coming from the left side... again, a QB needs to read that; a tackle is never going to see what is going on that far outside the box and make a block. The third turnover was a pick thrown into double coverage at a time when the ONLY thing we couldn't have was a turnover.

I'm sure the kid will get better, but those are some CRITICAL mistakes... We didn't turn the ball over once on the ground and were rattling off big yardage all night long. When one thing works and the other doesn't and the game is there for the taking--- DO WHAT WORKS!!!

I watched the replay a few times on the pick 6 and the receiver's route was horrible. Not all Bo's fault. The receiver turned out side on stop route and continued to drift up field instead of back to the QB. This is a timing route and Bo has to throw the ball before the receiver breaks. If the receiver turns inside and uses his body to "box out", at worst case the ball gets knocked down. Just another case of the work that needs to be done with the receivers and qb. The timing was better in the second half. I feel much better after the second half about our passing game. They showed much improvement. MSU will be in trouble this week if they put all their focus on the running game. Let's get a W this Saturday and keep up the blitzing!!

I think BLM played pretty darn good, and was definitely one of the reasons we won that game. Yeah, the first pick was a bad read, but it happens. Also, that TD strike to Kauffman in the 1st Qtr off the play-action was sick!!!!!!

We may not be quite as threatening through the air as we have been in the past, new QB, new receivers, but we are a little more balanced, IMO.........I can only imagine how dangerous we're going to be when we get all the kicks worked out of our pass game.

I agree Dozy! This team is no where near where they will be at the end of the season. They will continue to progress and Mitchell will get sharper. I think what his Pop is saying is game management and being clutch, along with the rest of the team stepping up, is about as good as it gets.

I also want to say that my son and I had a great time at the game. We are very glad we were able to be part of the new red turf tradition. Tailgating was a blast with the Mitchells and we met some awesome people on both sides. Great atmosphere which should be duplicated every home game.

Lastly, do you think the guy walking around the tailgate area in the full red spandex attire is the same guy that outfielder Diaz for Atlanta tackled last night after running on the field? It's all over Sports Center.

I was wondering the same thing when I saw that on SC. He was behind me in the students' section during the game.

You sat right next to my youngest son and his buddy, both juniors in high school, and hopefully both Eagle football players in a couple years... :D

I could be wrong about this, but as far as TJ running the ball out of bounds, my understanding is that if it is outside the last 2 minutes of a half, the clock is started again once the ball has been spotted. Of course with HS, college and the NFL each having there own set of rules, this can get confusing, so I might be mistaken.

Great win for the Eagles!

Hard to say. Rex Prescott/Mike Mackenzie on the '97 squad were a pretty good RB duo.

Also, in purist terms, it's hard to ignore what Chatman did here. There may never be as punishing a back at EWU.

4,173 yards on 627 attempts from 99-01 - 2,096 yards in the '01 season alone.

Single-game record of 298 yards against Sac State in 2001.

The dude just ran people over.

As far as "play-makers" go, Jones is certainly on track to grab that title. His speed and fluidity are un-matched at the FCS level.
