Something to think about - Win/Loss Volek, Moose & Sperbeck

Check this out. I was looking at some old results and decided to add up the W & L's for Volek, Mooshagian and Sperbeck during the last three years each of them coached. The result is that Sperbeck has equaled in his first three years, what John Volek did in his last three years except he has won more Big Sky Games (because there is an additional member Northern Colorado) Here are the stats:

Volek Overall Big Sky
2000 7-4 5-3
2001 2-9 1-6
2002 5-7 3-4
Total 14-20 9-13

Mooshagian
2004 3-8 2-5
2005 2-9 1-6
2006 4-7 4-4
Total 9-24 7-15

Sperbeck
2007 3-8 3-5
2008 6-6 3-5
2009 5-6 4-4
Total 14-20 10-14

Marshall has also done an amazing job with the discipline of the team, the academic results of the team and recruiting has been outstanding. I have not doubts we will continue to improve.

Oh, did I mention he beat the Aggies two years in a row? :D :D :D

HHD, I was living out of the area back when Volek was here, but why did he get run out, seems to me we went backwards with Moosh? I agree on the recruiting and discipline- I am excited about what the team will be able to do next year.

Why did Volek get run out? I guess you'd have to ask Terry Wanless that question.

Coach Volek was a pleasant guy and a good coach. In my opinion general lack of team discipline ( not only the Pam incident) was a major factor. I also recall Coach Volek's unwillingness to replace some of the assistant coaches even though they were clearly not getting the job done. To me Coach Mooshagian
looked like he was in over his head from day one.

While I have no inside information about what was happening behind the scenes, my perspective at the time was that like many ADs Wanless wanted his own guy. I also believe the team was viewed by many as being undisciplined and unable to take the next step.

I do know that Volek had an eye for talent and brought a lot of quality players into the program.

Volek could find players.

My guess as to why he was ousted:
1. On a roadtrip some players caught with pot
2. Emotional outburst in front of new President Gonzalez and Wanless
3. Support of assistants who were not qualified
4. PAM, blackeye on national tv, brunt of many jokes
5. Graduation rates in toilet
6. Wanted to change Hornets logo to Little Cats, since he is Big Cat

Dr. Gonzalez had not been appointed when Volek got fired. The running into the locker room at the officials after the end of the MSU game (which, IMHO, was clearly warranted because they screwed us by not properly looking that the game clock had expired and allowed MSU to get off one last play, which then resulted in the defensive pass interference, which gave them one untimed down, which they kicked the FG to win 31-30) which got him suspended for the next game, which turned out to be the PAM game, etc, etc.

That run in with PAM didn’t help his cause any.

That had nothing to do with it.

Maybe not, but I’m still think Sac State could have use the PAM incident to land them a sponsorship. There’s noting like a PAM banner hanging in the end zone. I’m sure the athletic department could have used the money. It could have gone towards finding a new football coach who knew what they were doing; but no, Wanless settled on Moosh and the rest is history.
