Sorely Frustrated

I've been carrying this frustration ever since I visited Towson University (formerly Towson State) when they host Oregon State over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Towson Univ., a small mid-major program that boarders Baltimore, MD, is a member of the CAA (Colonial Athletic Assoc.) with VCU, George Mason, Georgia State, James Madison, Delaware, to name a few. Some, or many, might say the CAA is a grade above the Big Sky as mid-majors go, depending on who's talking. But if that's the case, it's only because the Big Sky will let a program like Sac State in the conference. A school whose football and basketball program may never advance beyond the success level of a descent Division II program.

When I speak of basketball and football, specifically, basketball, this university has done little to use the media and community resources it has at its disposal. Back to Towson Univ., they have impressive athletic facilities. I only walked pass the football stadium but even with Sac State's upgrades they have us beat hands down: real press boxes, real stadium with restrooms and consessions area, etc. The basketball gym seats 3000 plus with all individual seating (accept at the end of the court where the band and student section is; strategically placed so that the visiting team gets to face them in the 2nd half). Having to look at the Hornets Nest for so long, I'd take they're facility and be happy with it all day. But Towson is actually building an on campus arena!

This program ain't shit! After all these years we just got the football upgrades, even Bakersfield have a post game press conference and Cal Poly (where'd they come from) sends their team to play international games. At some point, you just get tired of supporting a losing program with a loser's mentality. We're a doormat for most every team we play. I laugh at the WAC talk that goes on on this blog. As bad and as fast as the WAC is falling, look at the success or lack of our baseball team has had, and we're actually talking about packing up our athletic program up and leaving for greener pastures, like the BSC will miss us, LOL.

In fact, the Big Sky should demand we improve the basketball facility or leave because it is an embarrassment to both the university and the conference. We'll always have a mix of DI and DII players trying to compete and win against true DI competition and it's ridiculous to think that we can on a consistent level. We'll have a shining moment when we beat an Oregon State team in football and basketball when they're at their worse. And then we'll continue to get trounced by everyone else, and that will be our legacy.

We need leaders in the administration with a real business mentality to stop embarrassing this community and make this athletic program what it can be--a program that this community can embrace and be proud of.

Gonzo lost his nuts when the faculty voted no confidence in him. Wanless is milking the state tit until he retires and gets his golden parachute.

Sac State is a mirror image of the state elected officials (clowns) at the Capitol.

If you want to support a winner, I'd suggest being a fan of another program that actually recognizes what it is like to be performance based and not head in the sand government based.

This is what we have become, playing a D3 program on top of the other non-DI programs we have played so far this year. I bet 469 brave souls show up for the game today against Maritime. Maritime has 850 total students, whooppee!

At this point I would almost rather reclassify back to D2, because that is really what we are. We are living in too big a house and can't afford to furnish it. Humboldt and Bakersfield both have nice, adequate facilities and we have the laughingstock of the country.

Doesn't help that dead beat Spanos stiffed us on his $9M pledge.

This probably should have been mentioned first. A pledge of $1M per year over a decade would have been huge, and pretty much a quarter of the way to a new events center. That coupled with the economic collapse doomed any chances of getting up the proposed events center. That was not the only capital improvement project that fell victim to the circumstances.

ws, the bottom line is you can look up and down any CSU and say the same thing with them. Ok maybe some other CSU’s have a slightly better gym but the same issues that have plagued us are not exclusive to Sac State. I’m not saying we should accept this, I think anyone here would love a new events center and improved Hornet Stadium, but the fact is without an infusion of private funds nothing new will get built. Plus most other CSU’s don’t even have the balls to sponsor football due to poor leadership and lack of vision. As much as people rag on Gonzo and Wanless, Gonzo is dedicated to maintaining an athletic presence (football could have gotten axed at the first hint of budget issues) and Wanless has built a competitive athletic program (something around 36 conference championships in 7 years). As bad as it looks, it could be a lot worse.

Side note: CAA hoops >>>>>>> BSC hoops. The two aren’t even comparable. The CAA programs have an infusion of cash via NCAA payouts resulting from multiple programs making runs in the tourney. Once the MWC is gutted due to realignment, the CAA will be hands down the best mid-major hoops conference in the nation.

Also if you have ideas or input that would help out the department, I am sure they would not mind to hear what you have to say. :twocents:

Wanless’ email: [email protected]
Gonzo's email: [email protected]

Both are responsive. I have always received a response from them (or whoever filters their emails) when I have questions and other comments.

If I'm trying to keep my job I'll say but on my watch we've won 36 conference championships. But if I want to fire you I'd ask how many of those have been in revenue generating sports? My problem with this leadership is 2 fold: they are not business minded, and they're just not motivated to advance this program athleticly. That's obvious. Our lack of athletic growth has never been tied to the economic state of CSU's. And it shouldn't be. To use that is a convenient excuse for lazy minded leadership who are content with saying they tried. I have a lot to say on this but I won't put it all in this blog. I'll just say Go Hornets!!!

Now what I do like is a healthy debate about college basketball and I know a little about a few programs around the country. SD, I can appreciate you rating the CAA above the BSC in hoops (maybe even in football too), but I wouldn't go so far as to say they are the best mid major hoops conference in the nation hands down. Referencing hoops alone, I'd go with the A10. Top to bottom they are the most balanced and competetive mid major conference IMO, with Temple, Xavier, St. Joe's, Richmond, Charlotte, UMass and emerging Saint Louis, the Atlantic 10 is tough to beat. CAA is definitely up their given the recent tournament runs from VCU and Mason. I'd just say they're top heavy. I would pick the CAA as the best Basketball-Football mid-major in the nation however. Question, is the MWC a true-mid major?

Good points ws. I agree the recent stagnant position of the athletic department is not good and we should expect and demand better.

MWC will be depleted with BYU, Utah, and now SDSU (and a lesser extent BSU) soon to depart as the recent tournament runs were made by two departed/ing schools (BYU & SDSU). The MWC will still be a solid conference (Nevada, UNLV, and New Mexico will still be around). Now if they add Utah State (who is having a down year) maybe they can keep their “powerhouse” label. I just feel that the MWC has lost a lot of their top programs with all these conference moves.

Side note: SDSU hoops will take a huge hit when they play in the Big West. All the SDSU fans I have spoke with aren’t too excited about playing a bunch of “red-headed step children” from the LA area. Plus they will now be battling for only one tournament bid as opposed to 2/3 the MWC has typically gotten the past couple years.

You are right, its not a business. And that's what has gotten college athletics into the mess its in. The Sandusky scandal, Tresselgate, coaches like Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, et al., thinking they are bigger than the schools. Its because they operate like a business in a what is supposed to be a non-profit environment. College athletics is not supposed to be about making money, win right now at any and all costs and if you dont win in 3-4 years, you are out. That's a terrible business model in the first place.

Yes, would I like to see the admin actually get a real arena on campus. Yes. Should it be a palatial palace? Hell no.

Somehow we have lost sight about what college athletics is supposed to be about, except for those sports where we have won 36 conf. titles in 6 years.

SHA, I'm sure your comment is well meaning, but intercollegiate athletics is a multi million dollar industry that is responsible for the creation of thousands of jobs. There's no getting around that. My point, and my concern is, when it comes to athletics, our leadership treats the university like it's the local Y. We do just enough to keep the doors open.
