Sorry SH, no UOP football

Nice find GCM. What I didn’t like about the article is that they didn’t talk much about the model of going non-scholarship and participating in the Pioneer Football League very much. As I see it, UOP would be in the same boat as USD in that it “saves” money by not offering scholarships but has to spend a little more in travel costs associated with being in the PFL. Right out of the gate the current AD dismisses the model her old employer followed (Drake also being in the PFL) and doesn’t acknowledge that it is cheaper for the school to pony up the extra travel costs rather than the money for scholarships. If UOP really wanted football back, they could do it. Startup costs would be high, but the subsequent years they could operate a program for well under $2M per year. Sounds like UOP has another “anti-football” president in charge. Tough break SH, tough break.

This article was discussed on the UOP board when it was published on Christmas. I found the article to be full of flat out lies. The Pioneer option would be bad due to the travel issues. I think that UOP football in the Great West would be the best choice, and it WOULD be doable. Lynn King was and is a sycophant suck-up to Don DeRosa, the idiot who canned the program and decimated a TON of majors. DeRosa even had a private playground for HIS children built with school funds on land stolen from a sorority. Dude should be in JAIL, not collecting a school pension.

But back to football. It's doable. A couple of 5th-yr senior players (i.e. done) in '95 put together an endowment proposal that would have made the program not only self-sufficient but paying INTO the school within five years. The president of the board refused to take the proposal before the board. So, yes, it IS possible and even practical, but the admin refuses to even consider it. ALL of them should be thrown out.

SH I’m surprised you are not in favor of the Pioneer Football League option. I think the Great West option would cost more. Yes travel costs would be higher in the PFL, but I don’t think it would be more on an annual basis than funding 63 scholarships (plus matching women scholarships). As unappealing as the PFL is, it is football nonetheless.

I want the auto-bid, SD. From what I've heard, the PFL isn't getting one even with the expando-playoffs.

BTW, it would likely be LESS than 63 schollies to match; UOP is currently female-heavy in athletics. Of course, when it comes to Title IX, nobody wants to talk about THAT.

Hate to add more gasoline on the fire SH, but here is a list of the PFL football budgets below. UOP could fund a football team for under $1M. I got this from FCSFans.com.

San Diego spends $1,183,665 a year on football.

Other PFL teams:

Butler - $535,346
Campbell - $892,411
Davidson - $616,673
Dayton - $941,124
Drake - $939,261
Jacksonville - $1,074,629
Morehead - $820,477
Valpo - $625,319

Compare that to the Great West teams

UC-Davis - $2,754,712
North Dakota - $2,409,630
South Dakota - $2,055,800
SUU - $1,871,404
Cal Poly - $2,540,558

Oh, and the GWC will never get an auto-bid until they can find a 6th member...and that’s assuming South and North Dakota don’t bail on the conference for something closer to home. I wonder if there is a possibility of all the Dakotas starting a new conference with a few other schools.

SDH: can you point out the specific URL where you found these numbers?

Here it is:

The poster didn’t provide a link for reference so I don’t know how credible it is. But given that the PFL is a non-scholarship conference, I would have to say that the numbers appear to make sense.
