Special Teams

One thing that might get lost in the euphoria of the win and serious questions being asked about the defense is that our special teams were wretched today. A muffed extra point, kickoff coverage that was abyssmal, two penalties that negated good kickoff returns, and no real positives to note. We had a kickoff from the 50 get fair caught at the 17, but two penalties assessed on the kickoff unit gave them possession at the 40.

What the hell happened to kickoff coverage? Two years ago Eastern led the country in return yards allowed. Today, I believe every drive except one started outside the 35. And Eastern kept shorting the kickoffs. Why not send them out the back? That's what MSU kept doing, and it made Eastern have much longer drives.

The muffed extra point is meh. We're doing better on our PATs then last year. With so many touchdowns, we are bound to miss one every once in a while. The real issue was kickoff coverage, as you pointed out. MSU outmatched us in that department, big time. One benefit from having K. Miller as kicker last year was he put them around the endzone on most boots. Roldan seems to put them at around the ten yard line with not much air. I think that's the root of the problem.

Tough break for Alcobendas, sounds like he may be done for the year. Do we have any other kickers on our roster? Miller is a fantastic punter and let's leave it at that. ;)

I thought Miller's PATs looked more solid than Roldan's, but maybe Roldan's just aren't pretty. He has been more accurate so far this year than K. Miller was for us. I think J. Miller's kick off* was really low and perhaps that was why he wasn't starting. It was a good thing he put it in the back of the end zone, or they would have had lots of time to shred the field. So, J. Miller needs to work on getting some height and air time on his kicks.

Edit: I meant kickoff instead of PAT for J. Miller's kick.
