I thought that it was worth posting that Jim Allen has done one hell of a job this year with covering our Eagles :thumb: . It seems as though every time I find something to be concerned with the program or Big Sky, Jim has an investigative article written for it the very next day. He is constantly answering the questions that we post on this page. It makes me wonder... Do you think Jim ever uses this forum to generate ideas on which articles to write or how the fans feel about particular topics? We have plenty to bi*** about and celebrate, which probably generates good ideas for articles.

Also, have you noticed a sudden increase in EWU football coverage by the Spokesman Review? It seems like the editor in chief told everyone at their August staff meeting that they would be pushing hard for EWU articles this Fall. Luckily, there is plenty of drama in the Big Sky this year to write about. It seems like there have been far more articles this year than in the past, which is fantastic. We are lucky to have so much coverage in comparison to our BSC peers.

Jim is great. He's done wonders in his role of covering EWU. Gone are the days of stuffy beat writers just attending practices and games, talking to coaches and players and talking to athletic's staff. You can't rely on that alone anymore to get all the info. And Jim knows that. He clearly follows the pulse of the fans here, and he's all over Twitter with great sources and resources there. He's every bit as important to the growing brand of EWU football as anything else.

As for this recent increase in exposure, I think we can thank one of our own for that - EWU super fan Ralph Walter is the Sports Editor at the S-R now. Or actually has been for nearly a year. But this is his first football season in that role. http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2017/mar/08/walter-new-job-perfected-you-can-find-me-with-the-/#/0

Go Eags!

Everyone needs to get a subscription of the Spokesman and make it known to his bosses that you subscribe specifically for the EWU coverage. :thumb:

Having known Dave Trimmer and Steve Bergum personally, "stuffy" is anything to describe Jim's predecessors. Trim is a Montana guy that fell in love with our program and Bergum is still a season ticket holder. Their reporting was more than likely hampered by restraints from the Spokesman during a time that all papers were cutting back and freaking out over increased competition from the internet.

Both were absolute pros and yes, Jim is doing fantastic work as well.

We are so lucky to have Jim in our corner! He writes as if he is an alum from EWU; so much passion and love for all things EWU. His coverage is very much appreciated! I have noticed a larger amount of articles this year, and I'm not complaining-- I LOVE IT!

Also, Scotty, anyway you can send me that meme of Gage you were talking about in the chat?

I agree with everything that's being said here. Thanks Jim. It is truly a joy reading your articles about the eags. I look forward to them each and every week.

go eags!

OK... potentially dumb question here... but is Ralph Walter the brother of author Jess Walter?

I'm pretty sure. During the 2010 champ run, Jess did a series about the team for the SR and I remember reading about him and his brother attending all the games.

Don't roll your eyes at me bud. I didn't mean any disrespect to Dave nor Steve, in fact I didn't say their name or mention them at all. You made that leap and assumption. I said "stuffy beat writers" to reference all sports team beat writers, not the former EWU ones for the Spokesman.
