Coach Hill and some of his staff were in Reno supporting the basketball programs and the Wildcat faithful in attendance. What a class act! There is no way you can help but love that guy. My wife is not a football fan but she was impressed with him. I may get her to a football game now. :thumb: :thumb:

FYI - Spring Football, per Brandon Garside, Standard-Examiner, today's sports article

OGDEN — Spring practices are well underway for the Weber State football team and head coach Jay Hill likes what he’s seen so far.

“We’re further along now than we’ve ever been,” Hill said after practice on Friday. “I’m very optimistic about this season. I’m excited about the direction the team’s going. I’m starting to see the personality of our coaches show up in the guys, and every time I see that as we get better, the more excited I get.”

Part of that excitement comes from the level of play Hill has seen at the quarterback position. Jadrian Clark, Billy Green and Justin Shaw are currently in the mix for the starting role.

In the offseason, Hill stressed the need for improvement at the position as the team finished 2015 with the worst red zone offense in the conference.

“Had they played at the same level last year that they’re playing right now at spring ball, I think we would have been at least a game or two better,” Hill said. “That’s very encouraging to me that they’re playing at a high level.”

The additions of Snow College transfer Stetson Clapp and freshman Dakota Miller have helped the quarterback crew push themselves.

“It’s upped the level of competition in everyone,” Hill added. “I think those other two kids that really haven’t played on our field yet are caliber guys that are going to have a shot, too. You’ve got five guys much more ready to play than the production we were getting last year.”

Starters at every position have impressed, but the running backs, tight ends and linebackers are the only position groups that have the kind of depth Hill is looking for. Still, there is hope the reserves can develop and improve to be solid backups.

“That concerns me right now,” Hill said. “We’ve got to keep developing a big huge freshman class from last year and the year before. Those guys are still freshman and sophomores. If we can develop those guys and we can sustain a high level of play through the injuries that always occur every year, we’ve got a chance to be pretty good.”

With the departures of secondary coach Cory Hall to Oregon State and offensive coordinator Steve Clark to BYU, a new coaching staff is getting its footing in spring ball.

Fesi Sitake was promoted to offensive coordinator and Jason Kaufusi was named the new defensive coordinator. The new faces brought on to Hill’s staff are receivers coach Kelly Bills and secondary coach Preston Hadley.

“It’s hard to replace a coach with the caliber of Cory Hall or Steve Clark,” Hill said. “Those guys are dang good coaches that I trust and care about.”

“I couldn’t say enough about the way these two guys have stepped in. Kelly Bills and Preston Hadley are outstanding,” Hill continued. “They’re knowledgeable, they get along really well with the staff. I think those two have just really flourished in the those roles. In a way, it’s a negative to lose those guys. In way, I think we’ve seen some huge positives come about from the hires we’ve made.“

Spring ball will continue on over the next few weeks, culminating to a final scrimmage at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at Stewart Stadium.

I like what I'm seeing here, Hill has never been this high on the players and teams' progress this early into the year. This Weber team needs to see some big time improvement in the passing/catching game before they are conference contenders, but Weber is heading in the right direction and it is making me very excited.

So, there was a scrimmage on Saturday...any word on what happened? Really weird the lack of reporting on the Wildcats Spring Session. I understand the issues with the Standard, but our own department isn't really publishing anything. To me that is strange. Maybe there is nothing to say. If so, then that is fine, but there has got to be something. It was a scrimmage for heavens sake.

The scrimmage was actually on Friday @3pm so that any fan with a job who may have wanted to go watch would not be able to attend the scrimmage. :ohno:

looks like a lot of dinged up Wildcats during spring ball. Hill looking to change the format for the April 16th annual spring game. Looks like they are just going to have O against D versus having selected teams. Just to many injuries during spring practices this year and Hill have to make sure everyone is healthy for Fall camp.

Jake Gallegos (DL) is not on the spring roster. Does anyone know if he left the team or perhaps is injured and not participating in Spring ball?

As far as I have heard, Jake Gallegos is still with the team but I don't have any insider info on this. Hopefully he is still with the team. :twocents:
