Spring ball & local media

Here it is March 25th, and the Sunday Oregonian published it's first in what I'm sure will be a series of articles on the developments of the O and OS teams as we head into Spring ball. And where the hell are the Viks? There is a tremendous story being written on the park blocks right now, on the campus of the biggest university in the state, and not we're not included. Not even a mention. By the way, I have been looking for the name of the sports editor in the pages of the Oregonian and can't find it. Anyone privy?

If you contact the Editor they will say something to the affect that it's not their job to drum up interest in PSU football, that based on the attendance at PSU games there just isn't enough interest locally. they will say more people are interested in the schools down south so they give more resources to those schools.

When local interest increases, as I predict it will mid-way through next Fall; we saw more local people at the games towards the end of the season last year, they will increase coverage. Burton and staff will welcome them in like long lost friends, because they need good press coverage to help local recruiting.

You have to make the story to get coverage. I won't go as far to say that the Big Oh isn't UO biased, but you have to make yourself the story to get coverage. When we were knocking on the DII championship door and UO and OSU were playing some rather terrible football week in and week out, we were getting quite a bit of coverage.

Just look at when Glanville rolled in here. We were the talk of sports radio in town for weeks until that little experiment blew up in our faces.

It's on us. We need to win enough games to be selected for the playoffs, successfully bid to host a playoff game, win that game, and we'll get some coverage. Same goes for hoops. The local tv stations won't send a crew out on a regular basis, but when we're competing for the Big Sky title and a ncaa tourney spot, look who shows up.
