Spring football coverage from The Spokesman-Review

So glad spring ball is finally here so we've got something to discuss on the board. It's been groundhog's day around here since basketball finished.

EWURanger,
It did suck until after the Practices started, I have been out to the two practices, and even they were not in Pads, I saw some future Players that will rise to the top. T mention a few, LB Trevor Davis Jr. CB Tysen Prunty. I mistakenly listed him as a LB earlier, Joey Zamora QB, Nic Sblendorio WR, is back running his routes, with no contact from his surgery last year. There are three practices next week, with a semi Scrimmage on Saturday. The team is progressing very well. Practices are Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Hope to see some of you on Saturday. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

"Last year, the Eagles switched to a base 4-2-5 defense that brought more speed and was expected to bring a little more pressure against the quarterback.

It didn’t happen. As the season went on, the Eastern defense struggled to get off the field. For many fans, the most galling statistic of the season was opponents’ 49.7 percent success rate on third down; out of 131 teams in FCS, only two were worse.

In the last three games, Northern Arizona, Montana and PSU were a combined 34-for-50 on third down, a major reason the Eagles missed the postseason for the first time in four years."

Well, it's nice to know everyone realizes what our critical problem area is... what's really tough is that this has been an issue year after year for a long time. We really need to find a solution this season and start playing some defense again.

The defense couldn't get off the field last season because it was comprised of freshmen and sophomores. This also explains your "toughness" theory. Most of these athletes on defense were really green and simply were not as mature as the competition they were playing against.

There is some truth in this. We have been young the past two seasons, really.

That said, that's not the entire problem. We've been pretty bad defensively for a while now.

To All,
I wish some of you that are so Damn Negative, get out there and attempt to do what those Players are doing. There should be some positive things said about the team, besides being so damn negative. Everything most of you have stated are correct, but I know there are some positive things about the Players and the Team. I know, I have seen what they do every day in practice. One of my friend we had a little run in, because he sounds like most of you that are so negative. He came up to me, right after the team started their practices, he said "Vic I am telling you right now, get ready for a long season. What he said didn't bother me, what did, he never said anything positive about the team. He is one if my Retired Air Force Friends, flew those B-52 Bombers. If he comes and attempt to talk to me, I would talk with him, just remind him there are Good and Bad in everything we do. How many of you were of there this morning? Not to many visitors were there, maybe about 75? I saw some good things, and bad things this a.m., now hope we get better by the time the season starts, Sept 3rd, against WSU. This is a free Country, u say what you want, there are some positive things out there with Team, and negative, that is why they practice so damn hard when the do practice. End up fighting for their positions. It is time to let them do their stuff. Go Eagles!!!!!Vic Wallace

To All,
Now for some of the Positive Things this morning. Gurub #3 QB did his stuff, he threw for a TD and ran for one. The Defense Played their Butts off as did the Offense, we had some positive plays/negative Plays. I saw some of our Red Shirts coming into their own, and they were hitting like they hated the world. Saw where the whistle was blown, to protect the QB a few Times. We have some great Walk-ons out there, don't know what we are going to do when 19 Recruits come out in June. Met some of the Parents of the Recruits this a.m. Since they had a week Spring, Bread, came in from the West Side, Glad to have met all Parents. Saw Cooper Kupp doing his things, along with other Players. I must say we had some Walk-Ons playing, and did contribute to the Team Plays. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

For anyone has been out to practices how is the QB battle coming along? I'm excited about our new qb coach and anxious to see what he can do with our current abs.

Vic, I apologize if I came across as being negative - that wasn't my intention. I think the D will be improved this year, but just wanted to point out that youth hasn't been the only problem. I think another year under this system plus a lot of those younger players maturing will equate to better play defensively.

EWURanger,
Thanks for your reply. We have an Excellent Team and Coaches, I know how hard they are working to get better. You are so correct, this team with the present Players, will be Outstanding with some maturity. Weather was nice, not to hot, not to cold. What little time they did the scrimmage was worth it. We see where the team is, and the progress we are making. Troy Taylor, and Eteri, are great additions to our team. I noticed Coach Taylor giving instructions to the Quarter Backs, he was on the ground with his QBS. I am very much impressed both addition to the team. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

Atomic Eagle,
The completion between the QBs, are very interesting. The two new QBs, Andrew Zimmerman, and Joey Zamora, is great to see. I think right now Jordan West, (2) Reilly Hennessey, (3) Gage Gubrud, but I think anyone of three can start. Zimmerman was here last year, but he was sick most of the season. Joey just got her not very long ago, I met one of our Recruits today, last name of Blair, that young man will be another great addition come June, and a very Big Young Man. Go Eagles!!!!! Appreciate the comments, as always, but beg to differ on being negative. Our defense has been brutal for several years running; really, we haven't fielded a good defense since 2010. Last year saw quite a few changes, and we were as bad as ever. This isn't a knock on the kids, who I think play as hard as they can. This isn't necessarily a knock on the coaches, although you have to wonder what film they watch when they do the same bad stuff over and over and don't adjust. It's just that our defensive system seems completely broken. We're trapped in the stone age where we bleed yards and first downs hoping to get a miraculous turnover. Modern defenses are pressing the hell out of offenses and forcing mistakes, and we don't seem to get on the trend.

It seems abundantly obvious to anyone paying attention that our D is an achilles heel. Last year, we couldn't depend on the offense to outscore teams, and as a result it was a tough year... especially bad over the last few games. Jim is noticing it, as obvious by his story.

I'd argue that the defense couldn't get off the field last yer because they were passive in playing 12-15 yards of the ball and because they never found ways to bring pressure. We need to start attacking the line of scrimmage and forcing teams to adjust. I'd love to see our D play like Montana played against us, blitzing overload on nearly every play while taking away short routes in press coverage. If we get beat over the top for 75 yards, so be it, but letting every drive go for 12 plays and 7 minutes clearly isn't getting it done for us. Lots of teams are young on D and still finished with much better defenses than ours. Third to last in FCS? That sort of says it all, doesn't it?
