Spring Football

Let's get some discussion started. Of course with Hoke graduated, QB is the biggest issue coming out of spring and fall camp. Adamcyk and Maraz are obviously and deservedly the favorites. Always good for the team to have competion at every position. What other postions are up in the air? Who's going to be RB? Starting OL?

I was talking to one of the coaches and he told me nobody's position is a sure thing. Whoever plays the best and has progressed the most will rightfully so, be the starter. It'll be interesting seeing what happens this spring. Let's all hope nobody decides to leave right after spring ball, like last year.

Most important thing this spring is learning the new spread offense and any changes to the defensive system that Lewis will want to make (if Sears is giving Lewis the freedom to make any changes). Very important spring, IMO. And no doubt Bolen will be starting at RB.

Hope Bolen will return to team good enough to compete for starting rb job. Fact he was the starter before doesn't automatically mean he will be the starter now - different offense last time he played and some very good, very fast, rbs will be competing against him.

You are right. I spoke with Bo a couple of weeks ago at a basketball game. He had just had surgery on his shoulder but said he would be fine in a couple of weeks. He seemed really happy and positive about being back. He could play three positions for the Cats. He could be a RB, TE (same as Nak), or an actual WR. He was an excellent receiving RB before he left and will be again.

As for the RB position, I'm not sure there are any other RBs better than Bo on the team. Guess we will see.

Bingo! The QB is THE player in the spread. A close second will not due. Check out Pflu's tenure and quarterback situation in 2010(no playoffs) and 2011(semifinals). The right QB makes it run on all cylinders.

Looks like Sears took a page out of Whittingham's book (as well as several other coaches) in playing loud music in practice. Also looks like Medina is the front runner for the starting gig.

I've been looking for any info this spring on how they are coming along and have a particular interest in #87, Cody McKague, to see how he's been coming along; is my nephew. Found a short vid at http://www.ksl.com/?nid=1153&sid=24688643 and good to see him and his teammate from Borah H.S. in Boise, Braden Corpus, getting some good reps in. Strange to see Corpus at WR instead of his usual QB but the kid is deceptively fast...should be a transition he can make.

Any other good resources out there right now on spring ball?

That's the best coverage I have seen so far on spring ball. Hopefully we will get some insite on the team at the purple and white game this Saturday.

I attended the final scrimmage yesterday. I came away with some general observations.

The best way to describe the new offense is FAST. The 40 second play clock will never be needed. It will be an exciting game to watch. We have some great receivers, backs, and tight ends. This was the most organized I have seen our offense look in a long, long time.

Defense could be described as aggressive pressure. I liked the fact that they were aggressive, but they were a little susceptible to being burned by the big play. Hopefully they get that taken care of by fall.

The kicking game looked to be solid.

Overall, the organization and positive enthusiasm were the best I've seen in a long time. Kids are going to want to play in an organization like this. I was impressed. :thumb: :thumb:

I didn't watch all of the scrimmages, but I will say that the last one was far better than the other one I watched. The offense looked like they were starting to mesh and move the ball better. Also, for the first time in the Sears era, it looked as if the OL was actually giving the QB time. The defense looked fast, but missed a lot of tackles.

Our offense and defense showed signs of being very good last year, I hope that our new O and D coordinators can get these guys over the hump and get Weber State playing Physical football again.
