Standard- talks with Fields

The Weber State men's basketball team has a verbal commitment from one of its top targets.

Shai Fields (pronounced like shy), a 6-foot-3 combo guard from Houston, Texas, will join the Wildcats in 2011.

Fields will play this year for Yates High School, which was one of the top ranked high school teams in the country in several national polls last year.

Fields told the Standard-Examiner he was impressed with just about everything during his recruiting trip to Weber State.

"I liked the school a lot. I liked the environment. I liked the basketball program and the players were real cool. I liked the coaches," he said. "There's not too much to get in trouble by. It's just school and basketball."

Randy Rahe's coaching staff made him feel comfortable at Weber State, he said.

"As soon as I got on campus, they made me feel like one of the players," Fields said. "They just treated me good. I had a good vibe around them."

Fields said he decided not to wait until the end of his senior year to commit to the Wildcats because of that vibe.

"They've been recruiting me hard. They've been showing me a lot of appreciation and I just liked it up there, so it's like, can't beat this," he said. "I really liked the school."

According to MaxPreps.com, Fields averaged 16.2 points per game for Pearland High School as a junior in 2009-2010.

Scout.com's recruiting site said Fields had also received interest from Bradley, Detroit, Houston, Missouri State, San Diego, SMU, South Alabama, TCU, UNC-Wilmington and Wichita State

Fields can play either shooting guard or point guard, but said he prefers to play the 2, where his strengths are shooting the ball and getting to the basket.

His goals for his senior season are simple.

"(Help Yates) win another state championship and make my team better," Fields said. "Do what I do."
