Stat recap of the roadtrip

After looking over the stats from the four games combined I believe there are some reasons to look forward to the rest of the season. First off Sac shot 48% overall for the four games, 41% from 3pt, 53% from inside the arc, and 66% on fts. If you take away the first half against Montana St. the numbers are 51%overall, 44%on 3's, 55%on 2's and 61% on fts. Take away the first halves of Montana St. and Montana and the numbers are 50%, 48%, 56%, 64%. I think you have to agree that we shot the ball fairly well. That doesn't even consider the freethrow differences as we shot 33-50 against 56-76. We ran into a NAU team who got extremely hot from beyond the arc (11-16 68%) and we laid an egg in the first half against MSU. These games were all played at altitude and I didn't see any quit in this team at all. That said I feel more optimism than most other posters on this board. What say you??

And if you take away the first and second halves of the MSU, UM and NAU game the team would've gone undefeated on the trip. Bad logic, bad team, can't agree with you.

Well Kadeezy.....I may have bad logic but you have no logic at all. I never said we would of won any of those games, only that I saw more optimism than most (YOU) posters. The percentages I gave for the entire road trip are probably in the top two or three in the BigSky for conference games. I don't know where I can get the conference stats so I'm just estimating where Sac St. might rank. If you don't like facts I can understand.

PGP, here's the link to conference only stats...

Sac Ranks in the bottom hald of the league (out of 11) in a lot of stats, but a small sample size...

9th in Scoring Offense
9th in Free Throw Percentage
Last in Blocked Shots
8th in Assists
9th in Steals
8th in Turnover Margin

Good number crunch pgp, but I am in the Kadeezy camp here. What we have seen so far through the first 4 BSC games is nothing more than what we have seen in Katz’ previous 5 seasons. To be honest I haven’t watched much hoops (I’m still heart broken over the latest event center failure), but I have checked into the box scores on the game recaps and it looks like things will be the same again this season as they always have been under Katz.

What you have described has always been the case under Katz. Always. We always seem to run into teams “when they get hot”. It’s no longer a coincidence anymore, just poor in game adjustments by Katz and the coaching staff and a continuation of this staff generally being out couched on a regular basis. Sure aside from Garrity and McKinney this roster is awful, but Katz has had time to address that over the years.

The free throw disparity is just more evidence of Katz unwilling to change his offensive philosophy. With the new emphasis on hand checks, tic tack fouls, and the fact that drawing a charge is nearly impossible now; the philosophy needs to be to drive to the hoop and force some action (and maybe draw a foul in the process). We have a player that can do this (McKinney). This style of pass it around the perimeter and then heave a shot in the waning seconds of the shot clock will never get the Hornets to the charity stripe. We have the second worst front court in the BSC (thanks SUU) so passing the ball around and looking for a feed inside is futile.

With all my complaining, the BSC is a garbage conference and there are other programs who are traditionally just as bad as the Hornets so there are wins to be had if this team can get their sh!t together. I’d like to say I’m optimistic and think that Katz can win some games and get this team into the BSC Tourney but that ship has long sailed for me.

BTW here are some sites that have hoops stats:
BSC Site: http://www.bigskyconf.com/custompages/mbball/2013/confstat.htm?path=mbball
BBState.com: http://www.bbstate.com/

I haven’t poked around BBState much so I’m not too sure on what specific stats you can find there.

Thanks SD for the site info. I looked and found Sac is 4th in field goal % at .488% and 4th in 3 pt % at .416%. Nobody seems to care about 2 pt % anymore but by looking at the other %s listed they would probably be 4th there also. I still think these percentages in four games on the road at altitude are a reason for optimism. I have watched as well as I can on some of these internet feeds and have been frustrated at times as well. I still think we can squeak into the BSC tournament this year. This week against two much improved teams at home will tell the tale better than any of us posters will ever be able predict.
GO HORNETS

Ok SD, I waited for a bigger sample size. We now rank

7th in Scoring Offense
4th in Free Throw %
Still last in blocked shots
2nd in Assists
9th in Steals
5th in Turnover Margin

We also rank

6th Scoring Defense
5th Scoring Margin
3rd Field Goal %
4th Field Goal % defense
5th 3pt %
1st 3pt % defense
7th Offensive Rebounding
3rd Rebounding Defense
5th Rebounding Margin
1st Assist/Turnover Ratio
5th Offensive Rebounding
7th Defensive Rebounding
7th Defensive Rebound %
3rd Offensive Rebound %
5th 3pt Field Goals Made

That means Sac is ranked in the bottom half in 6 categories.....top half in 15 categories.
I'd say the same thing I said before........I'm in the excited, optimistic column. What about you?

Eh…I’d say I’m cautiously optimistic, but still don’t think a BSCT berth is a lock. The Hornets have played well during this home stand, but if the Hornets want to make the post season then some road wins are a must. The biggest boost in the numbers are probably due to that fact that McKinney has been playing out of his mind the past 4 games.

My concern is that McKinney cools off and then no one picks up the slack. Maybe Garrity would be able to make up in a situation like that but we are just not seeing much production from the front court. Tiffin just doesn’t put up much points and he is a liability at the stripe. Salley has shown some flashes but can’t stay out of foul trouble. Stuteville is developing in his off the bench role. Mills has shown some flashes as well but needs to find more consistency.

Will others step up when/if McKinney cools down or when he sees double teams? We’ll find out soon enough. To the coaches and players credit, this team has been playing well and has a lot of momentum heading into this weekend’s HUGE games at EWU and PSU.
